Kerry?s Task: Closing the Arab ?Pandora?s Box?

In her dramatic testimony on Wednesday, outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared to concede, at long last, what Mitt Romney and many Republicans tried to argue during the 2012 presidential campaign: Al-Qaida is not close to being defeated; quite the contrary, it has been reborn.

?The Arab Spring has ushered in a time when al-Qaida is on the rise,??Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in hearings on the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. ?The world in many ways is even more dangerous, because we lack a central command [in al-Qaida] and have instead these nodes that are scattered throughout North Africa and other places.?

Clinton said ?one of our biggest threats? was now the ?Pandora?s box? of weapons flowing through these countries in the Middle East and North Africa. But that Pandora?s box may yield worse ills, and they will land at the door Clinton?s replacement, John Kerry, whose confirmation hearings were held Thursday. The post-Qaddafi chaos in Libya, the possible dissolution of civil-war-torn Syria, the terrorist no-man?s-land that Mali has become ? further roiling Northwest Africa ? could ultimately threaten the integrity of the entire Arab and North African state system that the West created in the late 19th?century and after World War I.

Some U.S. officials fear these countries could break up or turn into permanently strife-ridden lands that resemble Lebanon or the post-colonial countries of Africa, like Somalia or Congo, where tribes and ethnic groups never stop warring although the borders remain superficially intact, according to a Pentagon analyst steeped in U.S. involvement in the region since the Iraq invasion. ?The countries just become arenas,? he said. ?The various groups still draw on the resources of the state, but peace never comes.?

Such a domino-style effect could also reignite sectarian bloodshed in Iraq and elsewhere, in a counterpoint to the positive domino effect of democracy movements at the start of the Arab Spring. Syria, for example, could ?become an ugly amalgam of Alawite rump state and other areas, in which Syrian Kurds join up with Iraqi Kurds across the border to create an autonomous zone and the fracturing continues.

The chief beneficiaries might well be violent jihadists who end up with something even better than Afghanistan circa 2001: a vast swath of the Mideast and North Africa that has become, in effect, a new training ground. Clinton herself alluded to the danger of ignoring this new jihadi haven. ??If you look at the topography of northern Mali, it?s?not a desert, it?s?caves ??sounds reminiscent,? she warned in her testimony.

Even so, Clinton?s State Department seems to have been somewhat slow in catching up to this new reality. ?We?ve got to have a better strategy,? the secretary admitted. Nothing suggests this more than the cavalier way the Obama administration approached Libya, supplying too little security for its ambassador, Chris Stevens, who bravely traveled to Benghazi when he probably should not have, given the rise of jihadist groups in the area, according to some diplomatic experts.

Clinton, in introducing her successor, Kerry, at his confirmation hearing , noted that he ?has built strong relationships with governments here and around the world.? But in the absence of government, little of that groundwork may matter, as Kerry himself must now realize seeing that all his previous efforts to negotiate with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were for naught.

Kerry, in his opening statement, approvingly quoted Henry Kissinger?s 1994 book, Diplomacy, in referring to a new world order built on a ?multistate? system. But again, states may not be the main issue when trouble erupts in a place where there is no government to negotiate with. In most nations, U.S. diplomats are protected by the host country?s official security forces; in Libya there were none, and yet the State Department failed to adjust in time to save the lives of Stevens and three other Americans.

Kerry?s?State Department will have to do a lot more adjusting than that. Amal Ghandour, a Lebanese-born commentator, noted these dire trends in her blog, Thinking Fits, this week, saying that Arabs ?have never really stopped conjecturing? about the?longevity?of the nations they were made part of, thanks to ?the utter?crudeness and fundamental?illegitimacy?of the original British-French scheme.?

Indeed, the European colonialists did slice the Arab world up rather sloppily under the 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement and other wink-wink deals. Little of it had to do with the coherence of tribes and ethnic peoples; more of it was about resources like oil. As historian William R. Polk writes in his 2005 primer?Understanding Iraq, ?What would ultimately decide the fate of Kurdistan had little to do with Kurds; it would be decided by the fact that a huge deposit of oil was known to exist in what might have become a separate Kurdish state.??As a result, the British at the last minute simply lumped Kurdistan into British-controlled Iraq, Polk wrote.? ?

Many Arabs remain patriotic citizens of these contrived countries despite their dubious origins. But if this starts to seriously come apart under pressure from warlords, terrorists and other opportunists, then the Obama administration will face a vast new strategic challenge in a region it had hoped to de-emphasize in favor of Asia. Kerry said America had to ?assert a new role in a world of increasing failed and failing states.? Yet as his outgoing predecessor admitted, there is as yet no strategy for that.

Apple shares plunge as growth appears to stall

(AP) ? Apple shares plunged Thursday after the company reported quarterly results that point to growth slowing after five blowout years.

The stock was down $53.55 or 10 percent, at $460.46 in midday trading.

Apple Inc. is still the world's most valuable company, a position it's held for more than a year. It's now worth just 3.5 percent more than No. 2 Exxon Mobil Corp, however.

Late Wednesday, Apple reported October-December earnings that were flat compared with the year before. Sales grew 18 percent from the year before, but the startup of production lines for multiple new products like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini held back profits.

Of more concern to investors is Apple sales growth forecast for the current quarter of around 7 percent ?far from the 50-percent-plus rate it's often hit in recent years. Apple usually lowballs its forecasts, but Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer indicated that it's moving toward providing more realistic figures from now on.

Analysts believe Apple is unable to fully capitalize on the global smartphone boom with just one new ?and very expensive? phone model every year. There has been speculation among company-watchers that Apple may launch a cheaper iPhone, or a premium model with a bigger screen, but CEO Tim Cook put a damper on those rumors in his comments on a conference call following the report.

Chart shows temperatures for January inaugurals

(AP) ? Consider it the first fact check of a Barack Obama campaign pledge for his second term: Will he, or Mother Nature, deliver on promised warmer Inauguration Day weather?

It's shaping up as a close call.

In September, while campaigning in Colorado, Obama was talking to a potential voter who mentioned he had been one of the hundreds of thousands of people outdoors at Obama's bone-chilling first inaugural in 2009, when the noontime temperature was 28 degrees. Obama promised: "This one is going to be warmer."

Scientifically, the president can't control the weather of course. Still, it's a promise that for a long time looked close to a sure thing with the average high on Jan. 21 being about 43 degrees.

An Arctic cold front looks to be racing toward the mid-Atlantic, so it will be slightly cooler than normal on Monday ? and with a chance of snow ? but not as cold as it was in 2009. Look for highs around 40 degrees with noon temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s. That would keep Obama's pledge.

There's also a 40 percent chance of scattered snow showers. But the Arctic cold front won't arrive until Monday night into Tuesday.

Extreme cold on Inauguration Day, folklore says, can be a killer.

In 1841, newly elected president William Henry Harrison stood outside without a coat or hat as he spoke for an hour and 40 minutes. He caught a cold that day and it became pneumonia and he died one month after being sworn in.

Twelve years later, outgoing first lady Abigail Fillmore got sick after sitting outside on a cold wet platform as Franklin Pierce was inaugurated and she died of pneumonia at the end of the month. Doctors now know that pneumonia is caused by germs, but prolonged exposure to extreme cold weather may hurt the airways and make someone more susceptible to getting sick.

For Obama, second inaugural speech is a special challenge

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four years ago, his challenge was to cut through what he called the "gathering clouds and raging storms" of an economic recession.

When President Barack Obama gives his second inaugural address outside the U.S. Capitol on Monday, the road ahead for him and his presidency is no less challenging. Battles with Republicans loom over federal spending, taxes, the government's debt limit, gun control and immigration.

Obama is likely to save much of the details on those issues for his State of the Union speech before Congress on February 12. If he follows the pattern of most presidents' second inaugural addresses, Obama probably will focus on more lofty themes such as a vision for America, as seen in the healthcare overhaul passed during his first term.

In kicking off his second four-year term, the Democratic president also is likely to urge Americans to make their opinions known to Washington's divided government, as he did this week in urging them to press Congress to back his gun-control proposals.

But in this inauguration speech, Obama will be fighting history, former presidential speechwriters and historians say.

Second-term inaugural addresses rarely carry the drama and excitement that accompanied the first, they said.

"'Let us continue' is never as dramatic as, 'Let us begin,'" said Jeff Shesol, a presidential historian and former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton.

Throughout U.S. history, second-term inaugurations largely have been forgotten, a period of transition lacking the charge that comes with a new president.

"On most occasions, it's little remembered," Ken Khachigian, a former chief speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan.

That was very much the case at Reagan's second inauguration, in 1985.

Frigid weather in Washington that day - it was 7 degrees Fahrenheit - forced the ceremony indoors, and Reagan took the oath of office in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. The weather, not the president's speech, was the headline of the day.

A few second-term inaugural speeches have been viewed by historians as significant - perhaps none more so than the one delivered by Abraham Lincoln in 1865, about nine weeks before the end of the Civil War and six weeks before Lincoln was assassinated.

The speech's final lines, in which Lincoln called for "a lasting peace," are now being played in movie theaters across the United States in the film, "Lincoln."

SMALLER AUDIENCE LIKELY

In Washington, city officials are expecting up to 800,000 people to come to Obama's second inauguration, compared with the estimated 1.8 million who saw him sworn in four years ago as the nation's first black president.

Among inaugurations in the past three decades, the television audience for the 2009 festivities was topped only by that for Reagan's first inaugural speech in 1981, when there were considerably fewer viewing options, according to Nielsen, which calculates TV ratings.

The two smallest television audiences for inaugural speeches since then were both for presidents entering their second term: George W. Bush's address in 2005, and Bill Clinton's in 1997. Bush's 2005 speech attracted about half the TV viewership he drew for his first inaugural speech in 2001.

White House officials declined to discuss the details of Obama's upcoming speech. During his first inaugural speech, Obama called upon the legacy of the nation's first president, George Washington, praising the general for leading a nascent country out of the Revolutionary War against Great Britain.

"Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin again the work of remaking America," Obama said then, a theme that, in his 2012 campaign, evolved into an emphasis on rebuilding the nation's middle class.

SOARING RHETORIC

Obama was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2004 when he burst onto the national political scene with his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

"There's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America," Obama said then. "There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America."

That kind of soaring rhetoric helped propel Obama to the White House four years later - and, perhaps, set the stage for disappointment among some supporters once he became president. Some analysts say Obama's speeches as president have not always matched his reputation as an inspirational speaker.

Whatever Obama says on Monday, some observers in Washington believe he might already have given his best speech after the 2012 election: His emotional address on December 16, at a memorial service for the 20 children and six adults killed in a mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Name by name, Obama recounted the victims and vowed to seek changes in gun laws, an issue that had not been atop his agenda during his first term.

"We can't tolerate this anymore," he said of mass shootings like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School. "We are not doing enough and we will have to change."

Obama biographer David Maraniss likened the speech to Obama's "Gettysburg," Lincoln's historic battlefield address during the Civil War.

In a message on Twitter, Maraniss said that "people will long remember what Barack Obama said in Newtown."

Bolshoi ballet director in acid attack, eyesight at risk

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A masked attacker threw acid in the face of the artistic director of Russia's prestigious Bolshoi Ballet, endangering his eyesight, in what colleagues said on Friday was the culmination of a two-week campaign of intimidation.

Sergei Filin, a former leading dancer at the Bolshoi who has been in the high-pressure job at the heart of Russian culture for nearly two years, was attacked outside his Moscow apartment building as he returned home on Thursday night.

Such is the prestige of Filin's post in Russian life, and its power inside the theatre, that stunned current and former colleagues suggested the motive could have been envy, rivalry or even competition for roles.

Filin, his face covered in bandages with holes for the mouth and eyes, sounded relieved to have survived the attack.

"I was scared. I thought he was going to shoot me, honestly ... and I turned to run but he chased me down," Filin told Russia's REN TV.

"He turned and his face was completely covered, either a scarf or some bandage like a mask, only eyes (to be seen)."

The theatre's director, Anatoly Iksanov, had no doubt the attack was aimed at sowing discord in an institution that has rarely been at peace in a history stretching back to the era of Catherine the Great.

Filin, 42, had reported having his car tires slashed and his emails hacked in recent weeks, as well as receiving repeated nuisance calls from someone who stayed silent when he answered.

"This two-week campaign has ended tragically and despicably," Iksanov said, adding that the culprit "should be sought among those for whom it was beneficial to compromise the theatre leadership".

WAR FOR ROLES?

Bolshoi spokeswoman Katerina Novikova had been out with Filin at another theatre on Thursday evening and parted with him shortly before the attack.

"We just never thought that the war for roles - not for real estate, not for oil - could reach such a criminal level," she said.

Relatives, dancers and theatre administrators flocked overnight to the hospital where Filin was being treated, and later gathered at the theatre.

Some suggested that making enemies, or at least generating resentment, was a hazard that came with the post.

"This person was doing his job," Bolshoi soloist Anastasia Meskova said, choking back tears. "Of course, it's clear that there may have been people who were dissatisfied, but I can't even imagine what would have been the reason (for the attack)."

Russian media said Filin had suffered third-degree burns and that doctors believed it would take him at least six months to recover.

Filin told Iksanov he believed he had been followed home, and that the attacker had called his name before throwing acid on his face.

"There are very serious burns on his face, in his ears, on his forehead, his mouth, and of course there are serious concerns about his eyesight," Iksanov said.

Channel One television said doctors were "trying to save his eyesight", but Interfax news agency quoted the theatre's press office as saying late on Friday he had undergone successful surgery and that a complete loss of eyesight was not expected.

Filin was to be flown to a burns centre in Brussels for further treatment, Novikova said. State television later said it was unclear whether he would be moved there on Friday.

The Bolshoi, which has both ballet and opera troupes, reopened last February after a six-year renovation to its landmark colonnaded building, close to Red Square in the very centre of Moscow.

CULTURAL ICON

As a near-mythical icon of Russian culture, it is a magnet for both locals and foreign tourists, and has seen power struggles among both dancers and directors throughout its more than 200 years of history.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of those conflicts, whether driven by egos or artistic convictions, have been played out in public.

In 2003 Iksanov dismissed ballerina Anastasia Volochkova after reportedly saying she was too heavy for male dancers to lift, and in 2011 a senior ballet manager resigned after a scandal over sexually explicit photographs.

After the tightly controlled three-decade tenure of Yuri Grigorovich ended in 1995, the Bolshoi Ballet went through five artistic directors before the appointment in March 2011 of Filin, who joined the Bolshoi's ballet troupe in 1988.

Filin's predecessor Alexei Ratmansky, who is now an artist in residence at the American Ballet Theater, said the attack was "no coincidence".

In a Facebook posting, he called the Bolshoi a "revolting sewer" plagued by hangers-on, ticket scalpers and "half-crazed fans ready to chew through the throats of their idols' rivals".

He used the familiar version of Filin's name to end his posting with the words: "Seryozha - the swiftest recovery, and courage!"

Filin's mother, Natalya, said he had been threatened but that she did not know who could have been behind the attack, according to the RIA news agency.

"What's important to me now is the health of my son, that he does not lose his eyesight," she said.

Joy Womack, an American dancer at the Bolshoi, urged "friends, fans and family" on Facebook to "stop what you are doing and pray for Sergei".

"He was attacked by evil people," she wrote. "Pray that the attackers would be apprehended and dealt with in the severity of the law."

Rio Tinto CEO pays price of calamitous acquisitions

LONDON (Reuters) - Rio Tinto sacked chief executive Tom Albanese on Thursday and revealed a $14 billion writedown almost entirely on the value of his two most significant acquisitions, the Alcan aluminium group and Mozambican coal.

An engineer who became the miner's first American boss, Albanese will be replaced by Australian Sam Walsh who heads Rio's operations in iron ore, where it is the world's second largest producer.

Doug Ritchie, the heavyweight former energy boss who led the acquisition of Mozambique-focused miner Riversdale, was also shown the door after almost three decades with the company.

New Jersey-born, Alaska-trained Albanese had until now survived the consequences of his disastrous $38 billion acquisition of Alcan in 2007, a bruising top-of-the-market deal when Rio was under pressure from rivals to bulk up or be bought.

The deal, just two months after Albanese took the reins, turned bad as markets crumbled and aluminium prices slumped, battering Rio's balance sheet, nearly forcing it into the arms of Chinese state-owned Chinalco and triggering a $15 billion rights issue. Rio has since suffered years of losses in aluminium, with Alcan adding to problems at its original business, and has taken some $29 billion in impairments.

Walsh was already in charge of the division that accounts for nearly 80 percent of profits and his appointment hints at a back-to-basics strategy as shareholders demand better cash controls throughout the mining sector.

Walsh was welcomed by investors and analysts on Thursday as a safe pair of hands, but many also questioned whether a 63-year-old veteran would be a long-term solution, raising concerns over management at a group that also announced the departure of its chief financial officer last July.

"It's another black mark in terms of (Albanese's) M&A record and I suppose, given the magnitude of this writedown ... I'm not surprised that he's stepping down with this, nor am I surprised that Doug Ritchie is," analyst Jeff Largey at Macquarie said.

Rio had planned to shrink the aluminium arm, cutting back one of the world's largest producers of the metal by hiving off most of its Australian and New Zealand assets. But industry sources say it has not been mobbed by buyers.

Further damaging his reputation as a dealmaker, Albanese spearheaded a $4.2 billion deal in 2011 to buy Mozambique-focused coal miner Riversdale, fighting off other suitors.

There, like many others in the region, Rio has struggled with the challenge of getting from pit to port, after a plan to transport coal by barge along the Zambezi river failed to get the green light. It has also been forced to cut estimates of how much coal it will be able to recover.

Rail and port bottlenecks are the main headache for miners eager to cash in on Mozambique's coal rush, but it could take a decade for many of the current infrastructure projects to come to fruition on a scale to meet industry demands.

"ALWAYS A BAD DEAL"

"(Alcan) was always a bad deal, and Albanese was lucky not to carry the can for it back in 2008," one of Rio Tinto's 10 largest investors said. "Mozambique is more of a surprise, but the industry's record on acquisitions is appalling, and Rio is not alone in destroying shareholder value."

Anglo American is facing potential writedowns linked to its Minas Rio iron ore acquisition in Brazil, a project set to cost more than three times initial estimates. BHP Billiton, meanwhile, failed to clinch three ambitious bids under its current boss - including two tilts at Rio - but then splashed out $17 billion on two shale gas takeovers in the United States just before gas prices slumped.

BHP CEO Marius Kloppers forfeited his bonus last year after BHP took a $2.8 billion charge on the value of its shale assets.

Much like Anglo, which appointed a mining engineer as chief executive earlier this month, Rio will be led by a veteran operations man who will be under pressure to boost returns to shareholders and scale back on deals.

Walsh joined Rio Tinto in 1991 after 20 years in the auto industry working for General Motors and Nissan Australia. He rose up Rio's management ranks before being appointed to head its biggest division, iron ore, in 2004.

Walsh has a more relaxed presence than Albanese, who rarely veered from the script. Albanese has long been a lover of the great outdoors who walked across remote Alaska snowfields staking mining claims after college. These days he is more often found on Britain's canals in his own narrow boat.

SURPRISE HIT

News of Albanese's departure and the writedown, almost as large as the group's underlying profit in 2011, took the market by surprise, knocking Rio shares in early trade. At 1340 GMT the stock was 1.5 percent lower, having been down as much as 4.5 percent earlier in the day.

"I wasn't expecting the $14 billion writedown," said Tim Schroeders, a portfolio manager at Pengana Capital, which owns Rio Tinto shares. He said the departures pointed to a company under pressure to do a better job of managing its purse strings.

"I think it's clearly a case (that) the board's laid down the law in terms of stricter accountability than we had pre-(crisis)," he said.

Rio said the writedowns include a charge of around $3 billion relating to the Mozambique business - virtually its entire original price tag - as well as reductions in the carrying values of Rio's aluminium assets in the range of $10 billion to $11 billion.

Since Rio bought Alcan in 2007, aluminium prices have fallen by a quarter but costs have soared, squeezing margins.

The group also expects to report a number of smaller asset writedowns in the order of $500 million. The final figures will be included in Rio Tinto's full-year results on February 14, along with details of more cost cuts.

"It is non-cash, it doesn't impact valuation, it doesn't impact the earnings near term," said a London analyst who declined to be named. "For me, it's clearly negative, but it's not the end of the world," said the analyst, adding that the flagship Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in Mongolia was still going to plan.

Analysts at Sanford Bernstein said the writedowns amounted to 4 percent of their estimate of the company's value.

Neither Albanese nor Ritchie, who will leave in July, will take lump-sum payments, and both will forfeit bonuses on departure, including outstanding share entitlements earned in previous years.

Albanese is not the only chief executive on the way out of a major mining company. BHP has said it is seeking a replacement for Kloppers and Anglo American replaced chief executive Cynthia Carroll earlier this month.

HILLARY CLINTON TO DIVORCE BILL | Weekly World News

Hillary Clinton is reportedly seeking a divorce from her husband, Bill.

Hillary Clinton is reportedly seeking a divorce from her husband, Bill.

Hillary Clinton is about to embark on a new phase of her life and, apparently, this phase will not include Bill Clinton.

hillary_divorceB

?After her concussion and after spending a lot of time in quiet reflection, Hillary still isn?t decided what she wants to do professionally with her life. ?But she has decided that she would like to face the future without Bill,? said a source close to Hillary?s lawyer.

?She?s put up with a lot from Bill over the years, and while they have always worked out their problems, and she?s always stood ?by her man?, she realizes she wants to find a man who really will be devoted to her in her senior years,? said the source.

hillary_divorceC

There are persistent rumors that Bill continues to have multiple affairs to this day, even though his open-heart surgery has slowed him down a bit.

This will put an end to the ?two for one? couple.

hillary_divorceF

When it comes to political achievements, no power couple comes close to the Clintons. In?Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal, Duke University history professor William Chafe examines the dynamic between the former president and the current secretary of state, which, he says, affected their public lives and, therefore, American history.

Why did Hillary stay with Bill for so long?

Many speculate that it was because of Hillary?s mother. ?She always taught Hillary that the most important thing was never to think about divorce but to always put the family first. And that message was really an abiding one. But in some respects, when Hillary saved Bill for the last time in the Lewinsky scandal, she also liberated herself. At that point, she could become an independent figure in her own right. At the same time as she?s defending Bill during that event, she is committing herself to become a candidate in New York state.

hillary_divorceE

And now? Hillary feels she will come into full blossom, and become the 45th President of the United States.

A new model from Queen Mary, University of London could be a useful security tool in tracking people in large, busy venues such as airport terminals and shopping centres.

The research fuses information gathered from multiple Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) network cameras and geographical maps for the first time, and could be useful in locating people in blind-spots where the CCTV cannot see, known as invisible areas.

Co-author Professor Andrea Cavallaro and director of Queen Mary's Centre for Intelligent Sensing, based in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science explained, "Linking distant and disjointed camera views to follow individuals in a large CCTV network, for example in a train station or in a sports venue, enhances the ability to monitor wide areas to tackle crime. Also, this new research model could be used to collect data to guide the redesign of the layout of buildings in order to facilitate the flow of people, which could help evacuation in an emergency situation."

The researchers created a novel re-identification method that predicts a person's movements in invisible areas using a combination of behavioural models and floor plans. The model was tested using CCTV footage from London's Gatwick airport to predict a person's movements based on specific destinations on site such as exits, shops, seating areas and meeting points.

The possible path each person is likely to follow is predicted after generating a number of potential movement trajectories from one monitored zone to another, using the fact that specific destinations act as 'attractors' for human movements. The model accounts for the natural willingness of people to stay at a comfortable distance from walls and other barriers.

The research will feed into a new EU four-year video surveillance project called CENTAUR, coordinated by Fortune 100 company Honeywell, and is published in the journal Neurocomputing.

Akshay Kumar turns singer, dedicates 'Special Chabbis' song to wife Twinkle for wedding anniv, Valentine's Day

Bollywood's action hero Akshay Kumar has turned singer in his upcoming film 'Special Chabbis' and has dedicated the song to his wife Twinkle Khanna.

Akshay sang the song 'Mujme Tu...' in front of the media today during the music launch of 'Special Chabbis' at a cinema hall in South Mumbai.

Apparently, this is the same song for which he had rehearsed but it has not been used in the movie.

"I rehearsed it (the song) for three hours before recording. However, this song will not be used in the film. I just did it as a passion," he told reporters this evening.

The 45-year-old actor said he wants to dedicate the song to his wife. "I want to dedicate this song to my wife Twinkle as tomorrow is our wedding anniversary and Valentine's Day is also coming soon."

The film industry's 'Khiladi' had reportedly sung a few lines of a song from his 2010 comedy 'Khatta Meetha'.

The music launch was held at Regal cinema, where movie premieres used to take place in 1980s. The music of 'Special Chabbis', slated for February 8 release, has been given by M M Kreem.

Directed by Neeraj Pandey of 'A Wednesday' fame, the film is based on a true incident of robbery where 26 people posing as Income Tax officials raided a famous jewellery store in Opera House here in the 1980s.

"I can't reveal much about the film as there are lots of twists and turns in it. But I can say that I reinvented myself with this film and had a lot of fun while shooting. I realised it is fun to do this kind of film," Akshay said.

... contd.

How To Succeed In The World Of Website Marketing - Maynas Eric

After you eliminate television and print advertising, you realize that most people are ordinary and simple people with ordinary and simple needs. You just need to find your niche to make your Website marketing business a success. With the proper Online marketing methods, your business can be a huge success. Look at this advice to learn how.

Getting backlinks (links from other sites to yours) is an important part of Internet promotion. You should make it easy for other webmasters to do this by putting a prominent ?Link to Us? option on your site. Making it easy for customers to see and use your button will encourage more traffic to your own website.

A banner including a slogan should be on your site. This can help new visitors get a quick idea of what your company is all about. If you wish to highlight your product or services, this is a smart idea.

TIP! Increase your credibility and that of your business by offering major, reputable companies the opportunity to advertise on your website. If your name is next to a big name, a user is likely to assume that you are trustworthy.

There is no secret formula to marketing on the Internet. It is a combination of science and art. If you are planning on starting an Internet campaign, you should consider learning about both aspects. With your monetary aspects, try to maintain an analytic approach, but incorporate creativity with your marketing.

A great way to give your eCommerce site a higher PageRank is to start a promotional deal. If you give an offer that is enough of a steal, you can literally buy page rank because all the dealsites and consumer news sites will make links to your offer. Another example of this would be a retailer that relies on sales of loss leader merchandise to generate profit.

Keep detailed analytical information. This could include website traffic, sales, refunds, conversion, referrals, and just about anything that could be measured. Use tracking software to see which Internet promotion strategies are working for your business and listen to the comments from your customers.

TIP! Customers often like suggestions for future purchases. Providing a catalog or product information to like-minded items can generate additional revenue after the initial sale.

Watching your competition will help you immensely in web marketing. You will always encounter competitors regardless of your area of concentration.

Figure out different ways that you can advertise your website. Good ways to promote your site for free or cheap would be doing things like posting on blogs, placing posters in local businesses, or using a social networking site. You can get visitors to your page through many methods. You need to get creative.

Use tags and other text tools to highlight the most important text on a page. You can emphasize a single word using tags to underline, bold, or italicize it. This will help to ascertain how you would like your customer to perceive a precise message, which will assist with the explicitness of your communication.

TIP! A good marketing tool is to offer a free gift or some other incentive to your customers after they make a purchase, as a way of saying thanks. Never forget to make your customers feel special because the internet can often make them seem like anonymous customers.

For instance, if you provide home goods, consider joining forces with a business that sells baby products, and give their customers a price break. This way, you can get discounts for your customers and offer discounts to your partner?s customers.

Great content is essential to a successful Website marketing strategy. Update your content frequently so that you are sure that you are giving customers the information they need. In addition, allow other people to critique your content. A second set of eyes can give you valuable insight into the effectiveness of your message. The last step is to carefully proofread all content to identify and eliminate spelling and grammatical errors.

Do not overspend on advertising. You don?t want to waste money on something that is of no benefit to your business. Make sure that your money is being spent towards something that will benefit you.

TIP! It is helpful to have real-time leads when you are trying to sell something online. Real-time leads are a good thing; they will guide you to a would be customer right now.

Website marketing can be a great way to network and make contact with your market and your competitors. You could attend conferences, trade shows and other events for instance. Knowing your market cannot be underestimated, so use your blog and the online community to get to know the other players and customers that are out there.

Don?t abandon those projects that don?t work right away. Some great ideas are simply before their time or need to be rethought and tweaked. The Internet is always changing and people are always find new uses. Don?t sink extra time and money into ideas that aren?t working, but hang onto them in case they become viable down the road.

Add links to your website everywhere you go on the web by putting it with your signature. Join forums and include a link in the signature. Add the link to your email signatures. This is an easy way to promote your business without actively having to ?talk it up? to others. Place a captivating line above the link, which will encourage them to click your link.

TIP! Your website should incorporate lots of descriptive and rich keywords. Adjectives work very well in the world of internet marketing.

Create social networks on Facebook or Twitter to target a market. Avoid the possibility of being sued for harassment by refraining from sending unwanted marketing messages through social networking sites.

If you hold any kind of promotion, event or product push online, you must track how it is perceived by your customers in an effort to make the next offering more successful. It is helpful to watch the responses, in forums and blogs, to your online promotional event or advertising campaign. Use this advice to show your customers that you listen and incorporate their suggestions.

Dream big when it comes to your business, and keep your eye on your goals at all times. Aspiring to lofty goals is important for helping you to keep up the momentum to grow your business, and the advice shared here can help you attain those goals.

TIP! One important component of Internet marketing is identifying and then correcting problems. You should have a clear goal in mind when you throw your doors open for business.

Scotch whisky employees 'more productive than City of London ...

2nd January, 2013 by Andy Young

Scotch whiskyNew research carried out by 4-consulting on behalf of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) found that the industry is ?experiencing a second golden age?.

In total Scotch Wwhisky adds ?4.2bn to Scotland?s economy, made up of ?2.9bn from the industry itself, with the remaining ?1.3bn coming through the industry?s supply chain. The industry and supply chain support around 36,000 jobs in Scotland, which puts productivity at around ?275,000 for each industry employee. This number means Scotch whisky outperforms most other industries, and the report claims Scotch whisky employees are adding 57% more value per head than workers in the City of London.

Gavin Hewitt, chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association, said: ?This new research is further evidence of the key role Scotch whisky plays in the Scottish economy. The demand for Scotch whisky is coming increasingly from the world?s fastest growing markets. In comparison with other Scottish industries, Scotch whisky already enjoys an enviable export position across a wide spread of emerging economies.

?The report shows Scotch whisky is likely to play an increasingly important role in Scotland?s export markets. The momentum of growth needs to be better nurtured by both the UK and Scottish governments. Scotch whisky underpins their ambitions for export-led recovery.?

The research also found that Scotch whisky is a key factor in Scotland?s total international export markets, accounting for 55% of the growth since 2002. Scotch whisky exports are now worth more than ?4bn a year, which puts it ahead of refined petroleum, which is worth ?3bn and business services worth ?2.5bn.

Scotch whisky producers have also committed to a further investment of ?2bn in Scotland. The research, titled ?Scotch Whisky & Scotland?s Economy ? A 100-Year Blend? was commissioned by the SWA to mark its centenary.

Conflation | the parable maternal: a blog on writing, rhetoric, and ...

Truth: I really, really struggle to understand academic texts. I posted this on Facebook tonight:

sometimes academic-speak makes my head hurt. oh wait, who am i kidding? all the time. :( i wrote myself a to do note: believe that i can still be a successful educator without using the big words and conflated language that don?t always make sense to me.

I did okay in my Sociology courses; I read articles about mommy blogs and students with children. I connected them with my work in the Women?s Resource Center and consequently became a self-appointed advocate for other students like myself. I even did okay in my Literature courses, reading about Miltonic marriage and synthesizing other writers? thoughts into a new (to me) concept of Heaven, Hell, and God. These were big ideas, and I survived.

But when it comes to grappling with composition, rhetoric, new media, and digital writing?I have an extremely difficult time. I think it is because I?m not reading these articles simply to write about them for an assignment, and instead am trying to whittle them into useful lessons I could use in a writing classroom.

Grace got Legos for Christmas. She?s been building houses and people and chairs, and specifically this one car that has a front seat and a back seat with a ?tv for baby Jesus? and a roof ?to keep the wind out.? This specific car, though, collapses often. She?s built it so top heavy that it barely stays together, the roof lacks support and thus she couldn?t add side pieces to also keep out the wind. It falls apart, and she gets really angry with herself ?(and the pieces) and then we have to take a break. She doesn?t understand that the heavy top pieces need bottom support, and she doesn?t always want to follow the instructions (or she wants to build something that looks different). As I was lamenting (really, I was!) the difficulty I have understanding composition scholarship, my partner pointed out that it?s kind of like Grace with her Legos ? you can?t just give someone a box of Legos and expect them to build something really great if they don?t understand the way that construction works (um, at least at a very basic 5 year old level).

One of my professors asked, in response to my Facebook post, what I was reading that was so difficult. I replied that it wasn?t?what I was reading, exactly ? the chapter I had finished wasn?t bad, and I took notes as I read and I somehow made sense of it, at least some of it. It?s that I really want small, simple lessons. I want scholarship that I can read with my students, instead of having to translate theory into application for them when I don?t entirely understand it myself. I want to learn alongside my students, and I want to feel comfortable bringing scholarship that I?m reading into my classroom for them to read too. I want to know what works, in teaching writing. I want to know what to teach my students, on a very practical level, that will help them become better, more confident, self-efficacious, capable writers. I want to know what to teach them so that they can communicate effectively through writing. I know that in graduate school, we wrestle with big concepts. I have a hard time finding a thread to grab on to. I?m very interested in new media, for example, and it seems so huge to me that I?m not sure where to begin, where to start. I?m interested in composing in digital environments, but I feel like I need to be able to somehow grasp it in its entirety (or at least enough of it) in order to make use of it, and I?m not there yet.

I?ve had many great instructors over the 9 years it took me to finish my undergraduate degree. Those that were most memorable didn?t speak to me in academic-ese. I hardly remember what we read in class, but I do remember feeling that the material was accessible, and that my instructors were confident that the activities or lessons they were using were going to teach us something necessary, something visible, something important. There are two classes that stand out to me as especially significant: One, a Generation X Special Topics Literature course at HFCC taught by John Rietz. Two, an Introduction to Creative Writing course at WCC taught by Jane Ratcliffe. Neither of these two instructors were particularly ?academic.? Jane said once that she had gotten her MFA so that she could teach, though she doesn?t teach regularly and I don?t think has taught that class since I took it in 2010. John Rietz teaches Composition and Literature courses at HFCC and while I had him for three courses total, I don?t remember much about my early undergrad. Here?s what I do remember:

I took Generation X Lit because it sounded cool. I began that course as a 19 year old practicing evangelical Christian, and left it without religion, and with a newfound critical approach to nearly everything. I wasn?t always paying attention, and didn?t always read the assigned books (we read?a lot of books). I met the man who would eventually become the father of my child, and I started a job at Starbucks and left it within the same month. I took Professor Rietz later on for American Literature, and for Composition II; I?m not sure which course it was that I had with him when I was pregnant with my daughter, but he treated me as an equal, as an intelligent individual with a huge amount of potential, and that feeling of empowerment I will never forget. I didn?t get all A?s in his classes, but I did take with me the memory of an educator who was laid back, funny, comfortable, and approachable. He made higher education, and consequently theory (postmodernism!) inviting. Nothing about those courses was alienating or unattainable. Winter wasn?t gray and nauseating; I saw white and brightness.

Jane?s creative writing class was fiction-based. I. Do. Not. Write. Fiction. I was writing poetry, and had been writing poetry for most of my life but had stopped in the years before I had my daughter and hadn?t picked it back up. I can remember exactly where I was standing when I realized why I had stopped writing, and decided to start again. I was pushing Grace in a stroller, walking down Main St. in downtown Plymouth not far from the tiny apartment we were renting. I was on the phone with somebody. Jane had us do workshops; right away, we were assigned days to present our work ? first with 6-8 pages, and second with 8-10 pages. Each person would share their work twice, and each day two people read. After you read your story, every student (who had a copy of your work) would have the opportunity to share their thoughts and offer feedback, which ended with Jane having the final say. Once, we did something similar to blackout poems, we read part of O?Brien?s The Things They Carried and talked about how what we carry (or what our characters carry) is a way to describe them beyond just their faces ? she always reminded us that our characters had bodies, and that we should show and not tell the action. Another time we read ?some of Jhumpa Lahiri?s?Interpreter of Maladies,?but I can?t remember why. Jane found this giant stuffed horse for Grace, and one day she pulled me aside after class and said that she wanted to push me because she thought I had talent. I left class that particular day with tears in my eyes. Jane always wore black, and I still think about her every time I put on my favorite black shirt.

What stands out to me in these memories is that these learning experiences were tangible. They were touchable and human and not lost in the theory clouds. I was given something small ? a pebble ? and was able to build with that, rather than trying to sort through something that didn?t make sense to me in order to prove that I had mastered a concept. This is how I want to teach composition, and this is how I want to approach my own scholarship and the writing I consume. I want to know how to teach writing at a very basic level. I want to know what works. I want a toolbox that lets us build and evolve, and I want it to make sense.

My students want to learn grammar, and basic methods and rules for putting together a research paper, an argument, an annotated bibliography. I don?t feel prepared to give them these lessons; my nose is buried in ideas that are fascinating, but too far off the ground for me to use right now. This isn?t to say they aren?t valuable ? I was reading about intellectual property and postmodern ideas of text ? but I?m worried that the scholarship I am engaged with (and wanting to share) is going to further alienate my students who are already struggling to understand difficult material, or who are told that they need to learn how to write (we all need to learn how to write). Where is the point of entry? How do I channel these educators who were so inspiring to me, when I can?t pinpoint exactly what practical lessons I took away from those experiences that directly contributed to my development as a writer? How did I learn to do a research paper? I have no idea. How did I learn which sources were good and which were less credible? Common sense, maybe? Appearance? I don?t know.

I worry about not being able to keep up with academic scholarship. It makes my head hurt, if I am to be completely honest. I worry that because I don?t particularly like 25 page articles written in academic speak, that I won?t be able to succeed in this field. The two instructors I mentioned? They never gave us articles to read. They gave us fiction (or non-fiction), and let us interpret, led us in discussion about concepts and ideas, but not the metacognitive writing-about-writing books that I?ve stashed in my living room in various piles. Where are my resources? How do I build this toolbox? How do I teach from experience when it is fuzzy, and from tried-and-true lessons that do justice to the evolving and expanding notions of text while still focusing on literacy as a fundamental goal? One response: write. Just write. How that shifts into the classroom? I?m not so sure.

House will consider Senate's fiscal cliff bill: Boehner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives will consider legislation to avert the "fiscal cliff" if the Senate passes such a measure, House Speaker John Boehner said on Monday.

"The House will honor its commitment to consider the Senate agreement if it is passed. Decisions about whether the House will seek to accept or promptly amend the measure will not be made until House members ... have been able to review the legislation," Boehner and other House Republican leaders said in a statement.

A House vote could come as early as Tuesday.

'Peking Man' was more stylish than we thought

"Peking Man," a human ancestor who lived in China between roughly 200,000 and 750,000 years ago, was a woodworking, fire-using, spear-hafting hominid who, mysteriously, liked to drill holes into objects for unknown reasons.

And, yes, these hominids, a form of Homo erectus, appear to have been quite meticulous about their clothing, using stone tools to soften and depress animal hides.

The new discoveries paint a picture of a human ancestor who was more sophisticated than previously believed.??

Peking Man was first discovered in 1923 in a cave near the village of Zhoukoudian, close to Beijing (at that time called Peking). During 1941, at the height of World War II, fossils of Peking Man went missing, depriving scientists of valuable information.

Recently, researchers have embarked on a re-excavation of the cave site, searching for artifacts and answers as to how the Peking Man lived. Just as importantly, they engaged in new lab work that includes using powerful microscopes to look at artifacts made by Peking Man to determine how they were used, a process archaeologists called "use-wear" analysis.

On Dec. 15, four of these scientists gathered at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum to give an update on their most recent findings. Three of the scientists ? Xing Gao, Yue Zhang and Shuangquan Zhang ? are with the Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of Vertebrate Palaeontology and Palaeoanthropology. The fourth, Chen Shen, is a curator at the Toronto museum and a special member of the academy.

Among their archaeological findings is a 300,000-year-old "activity floor" (as the scientists call it) containing what may be a hearth and fireplace, akin to a prehistoric living room. Analysis is ongoing, and Yue Zhang noted that 3-D scanners are being used to map it. If the results hold up, it may prove once and for all that Peking Man was able to control fire, an important skill given the chilly weather at times in northern China. Spear discovery
The use-wear analysis of Peking Man's tools yielded several interesting finds. Chen Shen said that analysis of the base of Peking Man's stone tools reveal that the hominid "likely" attached stone points to sticks, creating a sort of spear. It's an important step in human development as it involves putting together two materials, the stone tip and stick, to form a composite tool.

Scientists are still trying to determine the details. For instance, Shen said it is possible that Peking Man was making spears with short sticks. While not as useful for hunting, the short stick would act as "an extension of the tool," and "you can hold it while you are scrapping or engraving," Shen said in an interview with LiveScience. Researchers are also trying to determine whether Peking Man used some form of sticky organic material to aid in the process of hafting a spear.

Another question is how this fits, chronologically, with other recent prehistoric findings. Just last month, scientists working in South Africa reported in the journal Science that another hominid named Homo heidelbergensis was making spears 500,000 years ago (in that case, probably to hunt animals). This leaves researchers wondering whether Peking Man, a different hominid, started making spears at around the same time.

More mysteries
The team also found evidence through the use-wear analysis that Peking Man was working wood (which didn't preserve in the cave) with their stone tools, possibly to turn it into wooden tools.

Perhaps the strangest finding was evidence for "drilling." Shen explained they don't know what the hominids were drilling into, or why, but they were certainly engaging in it with their stone tools. There is no evidence so far that Peking Man made ornaments or what we would consider art.

Finally, the analysis shows that Peking Man had an interest in clothes. "A certain proportion of tools were being used for the working and scraping of hides," Shen said in the interview.

"If they are depressing the hides, if they are softening hides, they can use the hides for their clothes," something no sophisticated hominids would dare live without.
