Action Fraud launch - Professional Security Magazine Online

Fraud5

March has seen West Yorkshire police and the remaining police forces of Yorkshire and the Humber join the rest of the UK?s police forces in launching Action Fraud as a central point of contact for reporting fraud and financially motivated internet crime.

Action Fraud is being launched nationally on April 1, 2013, but from since March 25, the public from across Yorkshire and the Humber will be encouraged to report fraud and internet scams directly to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

The four forces have been working together to ensure that the new reporting system is adopted consistently across the region and, in doing so, remain committed to tackling fraud, scams and con-artists at a local and regional level.

Action Fraud, run by the National Fraud Authority, will be the main agency for people to contact if they are a victim of a scam or fraud offence both in terms of making reports and accessing support and prevention advice. Reports taken will be used to formulate a national picture as well as being passed on to forces for further investigation.

Speaking of the initiative, Detective Superintendent Steve Waite, Head of Intelligence for Regional Operations said: ?Action Fraud will enable a better sharing of information about the nature and extent of fraud across the region and beyond which will assist all law-enforcement partners in tackling the various different types of fraud affecting our local communities and businesses.

?Here in Yorkshire and the Humber the Economic Crime Units within the four forces have been working together as well as with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau to ensure we?re ready to go live with Action Fraud on March 25.

?People will still be able to report fraud to their local force, who will take action if a possible fraudster is at their door for example. In non-urgent situations however, they will be encouraged to contact Action Fraud as the most appropriate agency.?

Detective Inspector Andy Howard of West Yorkshire Police said: ?Fraud is a serious offence that affected nearly 5,000 people in West Yorkshire in 2011/12 and West Yorkshire Police have been working closely with Action Fraud here to ensure that the public of West Yorkshire will continue to receive a quality service in relation to the reporting and investigation of fraud and internet crime.

?Having Action Fraud as the main point of contact for people to report this type of crime to ? and contact for updates ? provides the public with an agency who will deal solely with fraud, so we hope people see this as a positive measure and a sign of our commitment to treating fraud seriously.

?People should always contact the police in an emergency, such as if they have a possible fraudster at their door. However Action Fraud will be the lead agency on Fraud from now on. The agency will take people?s information and details of their crime and compile investigations, working with the police to bring offenders to justice.?

Requests for crime updates or advice about fraud should also be referred to Action Fraud via action.fraud@nfa.gsi.gov.uk or in writing to: The Information Manager, FREEPOST, Action Fraud, UK.

(AP) ? Late in the third quarter, the game was tied and the Miami Heat winning streak seemed to be in jeopardy.

Then LeBron James got mad.

And then the Orlando Magic had no chance.

James finished with 24 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, throwing down a dunk to start a huge, swift run that decided everything and the Heat won their 27th straight game by topping the Magic 108-94 on Monday night.

"We are not taking this team for granted," James said. "I continue to always say that in professional sports, wins are hard to come by and teams like this are really rare. To be part of a team like this, we do not take it for granted."

That dunk ? which came one possession after James badly missed a layup and got frustrated ? started what became a 20-2 run over merely a 4?-minute portion of the third and fourth quarters, and it put the Heat in control for good.

He left one rebound shy of a triple-double, feigning disappointment. That's about all the Heat could complain about afterward.

Mario Chalmers scored 17, and Chris Bosh and Ray Allen each added 12 for Miami, giving Heat coach Erik Spoelstra his 250th win and bringing the reigning NBA champions within six games of matching the Lakers for the longest winning streak in league history, a 33-game run.

"We did enough late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter to come away with this win," Spoelstra said. "That was some of our best in that fourth quarter on both ends of the court. ... Before that, it was a little bit of a sleepwalk."

Jameer Nelson had 27 points and 12 assists for the Magic, who got 20 points from Tobias Harris. And Magic coach Jacque Vaughn didn't exactly seem to think after the game that Miami's winning streak will end anytime soon.

"I'm far from the expert on that. ... That's a very good ballclub led by a very good player," Vaughn said. "It's impressive what they're doing."

The four-game road trip for Miami continues in Chicago on Wednesday, followed by a Friday matchup in New Orleans ? which snapped Denver's 15-game winning streak on Monday night. Miami's trip ends Sunday in San Antonio.

It's now the second-longest winning streak in American major sports, behind only the Lakers' run. Baseball's New York Giants won 26 straight games in 1916, the New England Patriots took 21 consecutive NFL games in 2003 and 2004, and the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins won 17 consecutive times in 1993.

"When they got rolling, we had to try to stop them," said Orlando's Kyle O'Quinn. "But they got rolling too quick."

Both teams were missing key components, Dwyane Wade for Miami and Nik Vucevic for Orlando.

Wade missed his second straight contest with a sore right knee, one that he said before the game had been bothering him periodically since March 9 and then flared up after a collision against Boston last week. He had an MRI exam over the weekend to rule out any major problems and plans to play at Chicago on Wednesday.

Vucevic sat his third straight game while dealing with a mild concussion. Vucevic averaged a staggering 22.5 points and 25 rebounds in two games against Miami earlier this season. Compounding the injury issues for Orlando was losing power forward Andrew Nicholson, the team's first player off the bench Monday, to a sprained left ankle just 1:52 after he checked in for what was the only time.

A 9-2 run early in the third gave Miami what was then its biggest lead, 64-53. Instead of deflating the Magic, it seemed to almost inspire the hosts, who answered with probably their best 5-minute stretch of the game, capped by a 3-pointer by Nelson with 3 minutes left that tied the game at 68-all.

And when James missed a layup at the other end, then got called for a foul after the rebound, Orlando may very well have been thinking that the streak could soon be snapped.

Nope.

"They're a great team," Magic rookie Maurice Harkless said. "They got a lot of different weapons out there. Obviously there's a reason why they've won so many games in a row. They just took it to another level at that point in the game. We couldn't punch back. They hit us and we couldn't find a way to hit back."

Miami needed only 2 minutes to close the quarter with 10 unanswered points, with James doing either the orchestrating or performing. He got loose on a curl for a dunk to start the run, and the Heat took off.

Chris Andersen ? the Heat are now 29-1 when he plays ? got Miami the ball with a spectacular block against Harkless. James then cleared everyone out to drive on Harkless, score and get fouled for a three-point play.

That was part of a rough few moments for the rookie out of St. John's.

Harkless threw the ball into the sideline seats on Orlando's next possession, and James found Allen for a 3-pointer. Harkless had another turnover with 19.5 seconds left and then fouled James with 4.2 ticks remaining. James missed both shots, but got his own rebound, was fouled by Harris and made those two ensuing free throws for a 78-68 Miami lead.

"Any time LeBron gets a dunk, that excites everybody," Chalmers said. "Makes us play a little bit harder."

The run didn't stop there. Allen started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, pushing Miami's edge to 81-68 as Orlando's Beno Udrih ? who was 0 for 8 from the field at that point ? lay writhing in pain under the basket after apparently being hit in the face.

It was injury to insult, at that point.

Norris Cole lobbed one off the glass to James for a dunk and an 83-70 lead, Allen made another 3-pointer on the next possession, James set up Andersen for an alley-oop dunk as half the arena roared in delight as the reigning champions pushed the margin to 18.

Game, over.

Streak, not over.

NOTES: There was practically a baseball All-Star team in attendance, with Ken Griffey Jr., Detroit slugger Prince Fielder and Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia all near one another opposite the Miami bench. Tigers stars Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera were also in the crowd, as was Masters champion Bubba Watson. ... Orlando comes to Miami on April 17 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

An Arbitrary Number of Years Since Mathematician Paul Erd s Birth

Today would?ve been the 100th anniversary of the Hungary-born mathematician who worked published so many papers and so many with a high impact that a playful measure of one?s academic affiliation with him has been created

Paul Erd?s Paul Erd?s at a student seminar in Budapest, Fall 1992. Image: Wikimedia Commons/Kmhkmh

I take issue with the celebration of Paul Erd?s? 100th birthday.

Not the celebration itself, but the number. Why 100? The number 100 was chosen, of course, because 10 is the base unit of our number system: we have 10 unique symbols (0-9) which can be combined to represent any conceivable number. Ten units of 10 is 100, so it?s a nice, neat factor. If we used a base-12 system we would have 12 unique symbols, and we?d be celebrating anniversaries of 144 years. But I can?t find any particular significance about 100 for Erd?s.

Paul Erd?s was born in 1913 in Hungary to Jewish parents, both mathematics teachers. He moved to Manchester in 1934 for a post-doctoral appointment, but also spent time (unofficially) working in London, Cambridge and Bristol: a trend of bouncing from institute to institute that would continue for the rest of his life. Erd?s did not return to Hungary until 1945, when Soviet troops liberated Budapest. Throughout his life he spent time living in the US, Israel and Britain, and visited Hungary often. But he had no permanent residence. He lectured, taught and worked at dozens of universities, but never held a permanent position at any of them. He died in 1996 of a heart attack while attending a conference in Warsaw.?

Next year will mark Erd?s? 101st birthday, which would be better than celebrating his 100th birthday because 101 is a prime number. You can?t divide 101 by anything but 1 and itself and still get a whole number (where 100 is the product of 2 x 2 x 5 x 5). Erd?s once told his biographer Paul Hoffman, in a somewhat beautiful and somewhat sad sentiment, that prime numbers were his best friends.

A large portion of Erd?s?s work involved prime numbers. The first significant theorem he ever proved, at age 17, stated that between any number and its double, there is at least one prime number. The Russian mathematical giant Chebyshev had already proven this theorem, called Bertrand?s conjecture, 80 years earlier, but Erd?s proof was simpler and clearer. Erd?s later did a similar job of simplifying the prime number theorem, which reveals how prime numbers will be distributed. Close to zero, prime numbers are common: 2,3,5,7, etc. As one climbs higher and higher, prime numbers occur more infrequently. (The prime number theorem doesn?t? show how to find those numbers, which are infinitely abundant. The largest known prime number is 257,885,161 ? 1, which has over 17.4 million digits).

Reducing proofs and theorems to their ?elementary? state was a particular talent of Erd?s?. He once wrote a simpler proof of a theorem in a paper he was supposed to be refereeing. Erd?s believed that ?the Supreme Fascist? (God) kept a book of mathematical proofs in their most perfect, simplified states, and it was the task of mathematicians to transcribe the pages from this book.

In some respects, zero was a rather significant number for Erd?s. He never married, never had children, never bought a home, never had a regular job or very much money, and never stayed in one location for very long. Instead he traveled, carrying all his worldly possessions in two suitcases, making a temporary home with collaborators. This style of living took him all over the U.S. and Europe. At last count, he published papers with 511 people.

Erd?s? terrible behavior as a house guest is a thing of legend: opening a carton of tomato juice by cutting a hole in it and not bothering to clean up the mess; banging pots and pans at 4:30 in the morning to wake everyone so they could continue their work.

Despite his obnoxious behavior, Erd?s was usually welcomed back, and remained friends with most of the people he visited. Reportedly, he was a radiantly happy person, a delightful collaborator, and had a gift for getting people to do the best mathematics they were capable of.? In fact, a more fitting day of celebration for Erd?s might be December 26, 2039, or 1,521 months after his birth; 1,521 is the total number of papers Erd?s collaborated on, which is more than any other mathematician in history.

New standard work on the influence of the EU in the world

Bochum, 26.3.2013

In exciting times for Europe, the new standard work on the influence of the EU in the world is set to be released. Two researchers at the Ruhr-Universitt Bochum are co-editors of the two-volume book project "Global Power Europe", which brings together top international researchers. They clearly get to the root of the strengths and weaknesses of European policy on more than 600 pages. In initial reviews, renowned academics of the universities of Aberdeen, Salzburg, Tubingen and Yale define the two English-language volumes in their breadth and depth as reference works on the global role of Europe.

Complete survey of EU policy

The books came about in a joint project of the RUB with the European Union Center of the University of Miami (USA) and the Center for Global Studies of the University of Bonn. The co-editors are Jan-Frederik Kremer of the Institute for Development Research and Development Policy, RUB and Center for Global Studies, and Aukje van Loon from the Department of International Policy (Faculty of Social Science at the RUB). Together with Astrid Boening, they have brought together researchers from around the world to examine the extent of the EU's global influence and determine which methods and theories are useful when pursuing this issue. The result is a unique, complete survey of EU policy in a total of thirty-three theoretical and empirical chapters.

Surprisingly effective and silent in many fields

Numerous case studies illuminate the foreign-policy activities of the EU: this concerns its global influence in specific policy areas - security, climate and energy - and in different regions - Latin America, Asia, North Africa as well as the interplay with other institutions such as the UN, the International Criminal Court(ICC) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). From A for Arctic to Z for "Zero Tolerance for Violence against Women Campaign", the volumes raise understanding of the global importance of the EU. It turns out that the EU represents its interests surprisingly effectively and silently in many fields - for example, in its support of the ICC, in its trade policy or on the issues of standards for children's rights. In other fields, however, it also has significant problems in asserting its own claims (e.g. in development policy or "gender mainstreaming"), in presenting a united front or even formulating mutual preferences for example in security or energy policy. The authors provide clear and informed answers on the question as to whether, and in what areas, the EU plays a leading role: for example in international trade policy, climate policy, counter-terrorism and neighbourhood policy.

Enormous potential is often not utilised

"Global Power Europe" makes a valuable contribution to answering some of the most pressing issues of today's international politics: what will the future world order look like, and what will be the role of the EU? Does the EU have the will and the capacity of a global power? The answers clearly show that the Union has huge potential, but is still far from exploiting this in many areas and often lags behind its - partly self-defined - expectations. In a world in which a united presence is becoming increasingly vital when it comes to protecting interests, the authors show where the challenges, but also the prospects for the EU lie.

Presentation at international conferences

The editors are set to present the two volumes and the results in roundtable discussions at the prestigious International Studies Association Annual Convention in April in San Francisco, USA, and at the major "European Studies" conference of the EUSA (European Union Studies Association) in May in Baltimore, USA.

Mathematical butterflies provide insight into how insects fly

In Robert A. Heinlein's science-fiction novel, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, one of the characters states that butterflies are just "self-propelled flowers." While Heinlein's description of the insect's aerodynamic ability is quite poetic, it does little to scientifically explain it. Four Japanese researchers have done a bit better by developing sophisticated numerical simulations of a butterfly's forward flight. In a paper in the American Institute of Physics' journal Physics of Fluids, the researchers describe how they mathematically modeled a butterfly as a four-link rigid-body system consisting of a thorax (the segment of the insect to which the wings are attached), an abdomen, and the two wings.

Using data from observations of butterfly flight in wind tunnels, the researchers conducted three different types of simulations with their model that were defined by the position and attitude of the thorax: tethered (where the thorax is fixed), prescribed (where the thorax is programmed to move in an expected manner) and free-flight (where the thorax movement is unrestricted). They found that their mathematical butterfly did as predicted make use of the tiny, swirling vortices that form in the direction of travel during a downward flap, pushing air down and providing lift. However, they also observed that the flow around the butterfly is much more turbulent than expected. This turbulent flow triggers the complex trajectories characteristic to the flights of butterflies that may be one of the strategies by which the insects avoid predators.

Finally, the researchers determined that the pitching angle of the thorax is the key to controlled periodic flight, noting that living butterflies likely can continually sense the attitude of their thorax and adjust their flapping motion accordingly to ensure stability. The researchers state that their future work will focus on identifying the mechanism by which this control is achieved.

Vial with Venezuelan virus missing from Texas lab

GALVESTON, Texas ? Officials say a vial containing a virus that can cause hemorrhagic fever has gone missing from a research facility in Galveston, but say there's no reason to believe there's a threat to the public.

The University of Texas Medical Branch said Saturday that there was no breach in the security its Galveston National Laboratory and no indication of wrongdoing. Officials suspect the missing vial containing the Guanarito virus was destroyed during the lab's cleaning process but the investigation continues.

The medical branch says the virus, native to Venezuela, is transmitted only through contact with Venezuelan rats. It is not believed to be able to survive in U.S. rodents or to be transmitted person-to-person.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was immediately notified after the vial was discovered missing Wednesday.

US to continue support of Syrian opposition

(AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry says he was sorry to learn that the leader of the Western-backed Syrian opposition coalition has resigned, but that it won't affect the U.S. effort to try to force Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down.

Mouaz al-Khatib (moo-AZ' al-khah-TEEB'), the leader of the Syrian National Coalition, announced his plans Sunday, citing what he called insufficient international support.

Kerry, who made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Sunday, says the U.S. will continue to work with opposition leadership on the delivery of aid. Kerry told reporters that such a transition in such an opposition group inevitable and that Khatib's departure doesn't change U.S. policy. Kerry said the fight is about, quote, "an opposition that is bigger than one person and that opposition will continue."

Atherosclerosis: Specific microRNAs promote inflammation

Mar. 22, 2013 ? Atherosclerosis, an inflammatory reaction, is at the root of the most common forms of cardiovascular disease. Researchers at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich have now identified a microRNA that plays a prominent role in the process, and offers a promising target for new therapies.

Atherosclerosis -- otherwise known as hardening of the arteries -- is a prevalent cause of death in modern societies. The condition arises from the build-up of localized fatty deposits called plaques in the arteries. Macrophages, the phagocytic cells of the immune system, migrate to these sites, inducing chronic inflammation which exacerbates the accumulation of the atherosclerotic lesions. These can lead to obstruction of major vessels, causing heart attack and stroke. A team of medical researchers led by LMU's Professor Andreas Schober has now identified a microRNA (miRNA) that helps initiate the inflammatory process.

miRNAs are short segments of RNA derived from longer precursors transcribed from defined stretches of the genomic DNA. They act as versatile regulators of gene expression in cells, and also control the function of macrophages, in which patterns of gene activity must respond rapidly to changes in the extracellular environment. "However, the miRNAs that control the inflammation process during the various stages of atherosclerosis had not been identified up to now," says Schober.

In an earlier study, Schober and his team had shown that the microRNA miR-155 is a prominent member of the miRNA population in macrophages. The molecule prevents the synthesis of a protein that inhibits the inflammatory reaction, and thus promotes the progression of atherosclerosis. However, miR-155 does not serve as the initiator of inflammation. Schober and his colleagues have now looked at the patterns of microRNA expression in atherosclerotic lesions in the mouse, and noted that levels of a different miRNA, called miR-342-5p, increase in very early plaques.

New therapeutic approaches "The newly identified miR-342-5p is actually expressed constituently in macrophages, but it is activated by pro-inflammatory signals. This activation process then induces production of miR-155," Schober explains. The results of the new study thus make miR-342-5p an interesting target for new therapeutic agents. Indeed, in their animal model, the researchers have been able to demonstrate that inhibition of the action of miR-342-5p by means of a specific antagonist retards the progression of atherosclerosis.

"Atherosclerosis in humans should also be susceptible to treatment with inhibitors of microRNAs," Schober suggests. "Synthetic inhibitors are available for each and every microRNA, and could be used for therapeutic purposes as soon as their efficacy and safety has been demonstrated in clinical tests." Hence the researchers now plan to collaborate with biotechnology companies on the development of their own specific microRNA inhibitor for future clinical use.

Germany wins 3-0 at Kazakhstan in WCup qualifier

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:44 p.m. ET March 22, 2013

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) -Thomas Mueller scored one goal and played a role in two others as Germany cruised to a 3-0 win in Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier on Friday.

The victory leaves Germany in control of Group C of European qualifying, ahead of Sweden. Germany will host Kazakhstan on Tuesday in Nuremberg.

"It was our job to win here," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "The game was decided by halftime. We moved the ball well in the first half but it wasn't easy to find space."

Mueller played a part in Bastian Schweinsteiger's 20th-minute goal, Mario Goetze netted in the 22nd from a pass by Mueller, who completed the win in the 74th.

Germany played Goetze as a "false nine" because the squad's only striker, Mario Gomez, injured his hamstring in practice and had to sit out the match. Several other regulars were also missing because of injury.

The match kicked off at midnight local time on the artificial pitch at Astana Arena.

Germany had practiced on a similar surface back home and took control from the start as expected, scoring a pair of goals inside a span of three minutes.

Schweinsteiger connected with a pass from Mesut Oezil inside the box, controlled the ball well to shake off two defenders and sent a shot that glanced off the chest of Mueller into the net.

"I think I'll give him 20 percent of the first goal," Mueller said after he and Schweinsteiger watched a replay.

Mueller used a mix-up between the Kazakhstan goalkeeper and a defender to roll the ball to Goetze, who fired inside the roof of the net.

Kazakhstan gave the Germans more of a fight in the second half, but Loew's team had also switched down a gear.

Kazakhstan substitute Ulan Konysbaev struck the crossbar in the 69th with a tremendous shot from the edge of the area. One minute later, Schweinsteiger was booked for tripping Konysbaev and will be suspended for the match in Nuremberg.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was tested in the 71st when Heinrich Schmidtgal, who plays for bottom-place Greuther Fuerth in the Bundesliga, shot from the left side of the box. Neuer stretched his right arm to turn the ball away.

Shortly after that, Goetze and Oezil combined to set up Mueller for Germany's third goal.

"We took the three points and that's what's important," Mueller said. "We can put it behind us now and look ahead."

THE BIG READ

BY JOE POSNANSKI

updated 9:50 p.m. ET March 21, 2013

MESA, Ariz. - The great thing about being a super hero is that you get to disappear into a secret identity after you save the world. You can put your hands on your hips, stick out your chest, and announce: ?My work here is done.? And then you dash off, maybe to the Fortress of Solitude or the Bat Cave or an invisible plane, but eventually you take off a mask, put on glasses, do something with your hair, and melt into the tranquility of your secret identity.

And nobody asks you when you?re going to save the world again.

* * *

This is the story about a boy who keeps trying to save the baseball world. He didn?t know that would be his fate. He only knew he loved baseball. He wasn?t especially good at baseball. He just loved it. His whole family loved it. Heck, everyone he knew loved it. The boy grew up in Boston ? Brookline, to be precise ? so his love of baseball filtered through the Boston Red Sox, and the inevitable heartbreak they caused. He was 4 when Bucky Dent hit the home run that broke Boston?s heart. He was 12 when the baseball dribbled through Bill Buckner?s legs.

The boy grew up in a family of writers. His grandfather and great uncle wrote ?Casablanca.? His father wrote novels and taught creative writing. His sister would someday write television scripts. The boy did a little writing himself, but it did not grip him. He often felt like he was drifting, like he did not really know himself. But the boy was smart. He went to Yale. He went to law school. And he went to work for a baseball team in San Diego.

Then, one day, the boy was 28 and he found himself being introduced as the general manager of the Boston Red Sox. His Red Sox. The team was already hugely talented. They had superstars in Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez and Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra. They only needed a few adjustments and a little bit of luck. The boy and his staff made the adjustments. The first year, they lost in Game 7 of the ALCS in heartbreaking fashion. The next year, the Red Sox won the World Series.

The boy was just 30. His Red Sox had broken an 86-year curse. His Red Sox had ended almost a century of angst and dread and despair. He had saved the world.

Only Theo Epstein had no secret identity to melt into.

* * *

He sits now behind his desk at Hokoham Stadium in Mesa, and he finds himself unconsciously slapping down on a book called ?The Cubs Way.? Outside these walls, a book called ?The Cubs Way? would probably have a very different plot. It might tell the amazing narrative of black cats and Harry Caray and Wrigley Field day games and Steve Bartman and a team that has not been to the World Series since World War II ended, and has not won one since Geronimo died (yes, that?s right, Geronimo, the Apache leader).

This is a different kind of book. Epstein believes deeply in it. ?The Cubs Way? was co-written by, well, pretty much everybody around here ? all the managers and coaches and instructors and front office people in the Cubs organization. They gathered together for days and put it together. The book details the direction for the Cubs in every facet of the game ? hitting, bunting, infield defense, outfield defense, pitching, strength and conditioning, everything you could imagine.

It was written with great care. At one point, there was a two-hour argument about whether the runner, when rounding first base, should touch the bag with his left or right foot. Many around baseball think left. The Cubs ? because this is Theo?s team ? went through a painstaking surveying process, where they decided that the distance is actually a little bit shorter if you touch the base with the right foot. So touching first base with the right foot is now part of The Cubs Way.

?I?ll tell about one of my best days of the year last year,? Epstein says. ?I was walking on the field of our instructional league. We had our new farm director, our new field coordinator, our coaches, our young players, the energy they were putting out was off the charts. We had a talented group of young players who were clearly proud to be Cubs, who cared for each other, who were playing hard after a long season, pulling for each other, competing with each other.?

Epstein slaps down again on ?The Cubs Way.?

?I walked off that field,? he continues, ?thinking we?re definitely heading in the right direction.?

He smiles a little bit. ?But,? he says, ?when you are trying to build an organization the right way, moments like that are fleeting.?

Yes, Theo Epstein is trying to save the world again. Before it was the Red Sox with their curse of the Bambino. Now it?s the Cubs with their Curse of the Billy Goat. Before it was an 86-year World Series drought. Not it?s a 105-year World Series drought. The man, it seems, cannot help himself.

But more than than trying to save the world, Theo Epstein is grinding. This is what you have to do when your team is pretty terrible.

And the Cubs are pretty terrible.

Epstein knew this when he signed on to become the team?s President of Baseball Operations in October of 2011 and promptly brought in his friend Jed Hoyer in to be the general manager. They knew that the Cubs had lost 91 games in 2011 with a team swamped by bad contracts. They knew the Cubs had not drafted a single guy who had become an everyday player or starting pitcher in a decade.

Heck, when Epstein signed on he thought the Cubs had one player in the entire organization ? Starlin Castro ? who might be part of a winning core. He was actually pleasantly surprised to find that there are other players who might help the team win, such as pitcher Jeff Samardzija, who had pitched out of the bullpen with mixed results before Epstein and his new manager Dale Sveum arrived.

?Welcome guys,? Epstein remembers Samardzija saying on his first day with Sveum. ?I just want you to know one thing about me. I will do whatever it takes to help this team. And I think the best way to help this team is by being a starting pitcher. I?m eliminating everything in my life that gets in the way. I?m dumping my girlfriend. I?m moving to Arizona. I just want the chance to show you that I?m a starting pitcher.?

So that was nice. Samardzija started 28 games last year and, except for three rough outings in June, he was really good. There were a couple of other players who emerged last year. Epstein traded for first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who the Red Sox had drafted under Epstein, and he hit pretty well for a 22-year-old. Darwin Barney played Gold Glove defense at second base. Castro?s defense improved pretty dramatically at short. And ?

And ? let?s not kid anybody. The Cubs lost 101 games last year. They were abysmal. They may be slightly better this year, but nobody?s planning the tickertape parade. Epstein came into this with his eyes open. There was no Pedro Martinez here. No Manny. No Varitek. No Nomah. There would be no rock star rise like in Boston, no instant successes, no procession of admirers lining up after only a few months to declare him a genius.

But that?s OK. Theo Epstein never wanted any of that stuff in the first place.

Broadway hit 'The Book of Mormon' lands in London

LONDON (AP) ? Broadway sensation "The Book of Mormon" has landed in London, to a warm reception from theatergoers and mixed notices from critics

Reviewers delivered their verdicts on the show Friday, after an opening night that counted celebrities including "Homeland" star Damian Lewis and Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon among the audience.

The exuberantly profane show by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and "Avenue Q" composer Robert Lopez tells the story of two Mormon missionaries sent to spread the word in Uganda.

Most critics praised the production's skill and energy, though the Daily Telegraph's Charles Spencer said "its mixture of satire and syrup ultimately proves repellent."

Daily Mail critic Quentin Letts was even less enthusiastic: "I tired of it after 10 minutes."

And the Guardian's Michael Billington judged it "mildly amusing. ... a safe, conservative show for middle America."

Reviewers were full of praise for stars Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner as the young missionaries Elder Price and Elder Cunningham. Libby Purves in The Times loved the "big belting numbers, witty lyrics and joyfully athletic dances," but was troubled by the show's message.

She said the musical, "beneath its jollity, is morally null and ? without seeming to notice it ? racist."

"I don't see any Ugandans wanting to" see it, she said. "Even though the dances are great."

The Independent's Paul Taylor was more positive, saying: "I absolutely loved it ? albeit slightly guiltily."

Several critics compared the show unfavorably to "Jerry Springer: the Opera," a British musical that drew angry protests from some Christians.

Far from picketing "The Book of Mormon," the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took out three pages of ads in the program, telling audience members: "You've seen the play ... now read the book."

"The Book of Mormon" won nine Tony Awards in 2011, including best musical, and is a hot ticket in London, where it is sold out through July at the Prince of Wales Theatre.

Among audience members at one preview performance was Prime Minister David Cameron, who was seen laughing heartily throughout.

Stone was impressed the prime minister had attended.

"That would not happen in America," he said. "A politician just wouldn't come to ... they just wouldn't be seen near our (stuff). No way. If you want to get elected, you don't go near Matt and Trey."

Key senator pushes immigration negotiators

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A key Senate committee chairman on Wednesday chided bipartisan negotiators working on an immigration bill, saying their progress is too slow and the delay is setting back action on reform.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., also has criticized President Barack Obama, saying he's urged the president to send his own immigration bill to Congress. Obama has instead chosen to let the bipartisan negotiations proceed, even though deadlines have come and gone.

Leahy said in a statement that because there's no bill yet, the Judiciary Committee won't be able to approve a sweeping immigration bill by the end of April. That had been his goal.

"Without legislative language, there is nothing for the Judiciary Committee to consider this week," he said. "The upcoming recess period would have allowed all members of the committee and the American people to review the legislation. Now that process, and our work, will be delayed at least a month."

The bipartisan Gang of Eight, including Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., initially said they'd release their legislation in March but recently acknowledged it wouldn't happen until April.

Brian Fallon, Schumer's spokesman, said the Gang of Eight was very close to agreement and hopes the Judiciary Committee will take up their bill in April.

The legislation would call for securing the border, improving legal immigration and workplace enforcement, and creating a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

The Republicans on the Judiciary Committee who are not part of the Gang of Eight also have begun to complain about the pace of negotiations, although their concern has been that the process was moving too fast, not too slow. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and other Republicans signed a letter this week saying such an important issue shouldn't be dealt with behind closed doors and needed ample time for full committee consideration.

SpaceX's Merlin 1D engine gets flight qualified, Musk expects launch this year

SpaceX's Merlin 1D engine gets flight qualified, Musk says it will fly this year

It's been quite the eventful year for the team at SpaceX. A few weeks after sending a Dragon capsule to the International Space Station, Elon Musk's company announced that its Merlin 1D engine managed to snag flight qualification, thanks to 1,970 seconds of testing time at its McGregor, Texas facility. That adds up to more than 10 full mission durations. The engine scored a ratio of 4:1 for critical engine life parameters, well above the industry's 2:1 standard. SpaceX will waste little time in getting it off the ground -- Musk said the engine will be taking off this year, as part of a Falcon 9 flight.

Bilateral trade has been growing at 20 percent annually on an average, over the last five years. Bilateral trade stood at $17.39 billion during the January-November 2012 period. A target of $40 billion in bilateral trade has been set for 2015.

Hey guys--- I have a cool mom, she works at a nursing home for the elderly as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) I am SO DARN BLESSED to have a nurse for a mom! Like, when I have something weird going on in my body, i would text her and say "hey I got/have _____________________. What do I do?" and my mom would text back something like this: "take 2 tylenol" (just an example). Wow.... I'm also overweight. Whenever we go to a sit-down restaurant, and I'm about to order a soda, (Soda's very bad for you, OK?) my mom interrupts me and suggest something more healthy like lemonade. Are any of you as lucky as me to have a nurse (RN, LPN, and the like) as a parent??? You should really thank them for what they do, if you have a parent who's a nurse.
