How to kill time without staring at your phone

36 min.

Once upon a time, standing around and waiting involved exactly that: Standing around, waiting, and not doing much else. Today, any free moment is spent facedown in a phone. Stop reading this on your own phone. Right now. Look around. At this moment, you should be the only person, anywhere in sight, not looking at a phone.

But staring at that phone isn't the only way to wait. You can do other stuff. In fact, there are exactly six things you can do instead.

Make eye contact
People used to do this all the time. You could recognize a neighbor or share a moment with an attractive stranger. It can still happen???but you have to be careful. You don't want to be caught staring right at the moment that person looks up from his (or especially her) phone. Wait until the fleeting few seconds when this person looks away from the phone for some reason, then casually lock eyes. Smile! It will seem a lot less weird that way. When you get back online, this kind of encounter is a great thing to put on Craigslist as a Missed Connection.

Talk about the weather
This is a classic. If you're new at it, try some established introductory phrases.

  • "This is some rain!"
  • "Hot enough for ya?"
  • "They say it's gonna turn cold tomorrow!"

For this to work, you'll need a little luck, because you have to find someone else who is also not looking at a phone. Otherwise, there's a data-filled weather app just a tap away. Not to mention that look:?Why are you talking to me, can't you see I'm looking at my phone?

Observe your surroundings
If you look up from your phone for long enough, you can notice amazing things happening all around you. A pigeon pecking at a pizza crust. A man pushing a shopping cart piled higher than his head. A grown woman weeping hysterically. That's real life! And it is stunning. Once you get back on your phone, all of these observations will make excellent tweets.

Find unusual patterns
This one is a bit of a brain teaser. Look over at that odd brick wall, or the hexagonal tile on the floor, or that way the ice cubes collect at the bottom of your glass. Gaze into these shapes. Watch them form new shapes. See the shapes begin to arrange themselves, rotating, and falling into position. So chaotic, yet so organized. You know what? This calls for a quick game of "Tetris."

See what other people are looking at on their phones
This is an endlessly fascinating sociological exercise, and it can also give you fresh ideas about what you could be doing on your own phone. A scouting report from a recent bus ride:

  • Shiny gold case. Hot pink case. iPhone 5, no case.
  • Cracked white iPhone 4 with an incoming call from "Daddy."
  • Bedazzled lady playing "Bedazzled."
  • Woman urgently speaking Spanish into a white Nokia with gold trim.
  • Girl on an HTC, reading Gawker, followed by "A Farmer's Market, Deep in China."

You could also just read a book
But then you're not even thinking about looking at your phone. You're looking at your Kindle.

This is what I do, anyway???how do you kill time phone-free?

Tiny tubes filled with colored dyes let these soft robots blend in with their environments.

S. Morin, Harvard University

Chameleons and octopuses are masters of disguise: These animals can change their appearance at a moment?s notice. Now, so can a robot.

Scientists at Harvard University recently invented a squishy robot that looks like an inflatable letter ?X.? About the size of a smartphone, it lurches along like a mysterious jelly creature on the bottom of the sea. Now, in a project funded by the U.S. government, these scientists have created a new cloak for the robot that gives it the ability to change color.

10 Things to Know for Today

Nino Diaz reads a Spanish language newspaper at a Cuban cafe in Miami's Little Havana section, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 about the news of the day. The Cuban government has announced that it will no longer require islanders to apply for an exit visa, eliminating a much-loathed bureaucratic procedure that has been a major impediment for many seeking to travel overseas for more than a half-century. A notice published in Communist Party newspaper Granma said the change takes effect Jan. 14, and beginning on that date islanders will only have to show their passport and a visa from the country they are traveling to. It is the most significant advance this year in President Raul Castro's five-year plan of reform that has already seen the legalization of home and car sales and a big increase in the number of Cubans owning private businesses.(AP Photo/J Pat Carter)

Carmageddon was a graphically violent vehicular combat game which was originally released for DOS compatible computers in June of 1997, and was later ported to other consoles, including the PlayStation in 1999 and Nintendo 64 in 2000. It has been said that it was inspired by the 1975 film ?Death Race 2000?, which in itself inspired an arcade cabinet in 1976 by Exidy, and ported to the Nintendo NES in 1990 by?American Game Cartridges. The game was one of the earliest examples of sandbox style 3D driver, and very well could have been the inspiration for later successful series of the same style, such as the Grand Theft Auto series.

The plot of Carmageddon is that the player races a car against a number of other drivers in various settings, such as mine, city, and industrial style areas. You have a certain amount of time to complete each race against the computer driven players, but you can collect additional time by collecting bonuses, damaging or destroying the other cars, or more infamously, by running over pedestrians. Races are completed by either completing the course as one would a normal racing game like Gran Turismo, ?wasting? all of the other racers cars, or by murdering all pedestrians on the level by running them over with your vehicle.

Needless to say, when the game was originally released in 1997, many countries such as Germany and the UK (albeit for a short period only) censored the original release of the game. They contained zombies with green blood, as well as robots with black oil instead of red blood, as opposed to using people, because at the time, running over non-human characters was considered acceptable by the rating boards of those countries, as opposed to the murdering of human beings, which was considered unacceptable. By not making these kind of changes, the games could have been banned all together and not get released. In the UK, publisher SCi wanted to get some ?unintentional publicity? for the new title by submitting it to the British Board of Film Classification, which is the UK equivalent to the Motion Picture Association of America, in hopes to get an ?18? rating (equal to the USA ?R? rating). This scheme didn?t work however, because the BBFC refused to certify the game unless all of the blood and gore was removed before the rating. After 10 months of appeal, the BBFC certified the original version. In other countries such as Brazil, the game was banned all together, yet in Portugal and Australia, the game was released totally uncut with a ?+18? rating in Portugal, and an ?MA15+? rating in Australia. In the USA, the game was rated ?T? when released for PC and PlayStation, but was upgraded to ?M? during the ?Carmageddon 64? release for Nintendo?s platform.

Stainless Games is one of that increasingly rare species; an independent game development company. The studio can be found perched on a rock near the south coast of England. Best known for the creation of the multimillion selling Carmageddon franchise, the company is also recognized as one of the world?s leading companies in the burgeoning console download market. Cambodia's former King Norodom Sihanouk dies at 89

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? He was many things to the Cambodia he helped navigate through half a century of war and genocide ? revered independence hero, ruthless monarch and prime minister, communist collaborator, eccentric playboy, avid filmmaker.

Most of all, perhaps, Cambodia's former King Norodom Sihanouk was a cunning political survivor who reinvented himself repeatedly throughout his often flamboyant life.

On Monday, aged 89, Sihanouk died of a heart attack in Beijing, where he had been receiving medical treatment since January for a variety of ailments.

First crowned king by the French in 1941 at the age of 18, Sihanouk saw his Southeast Asian nation transformed from colony to kingdom, from U.S.-backed regime to U.S. bombing zone, from Khmer Rouge killing field to what it remains today ? a fragile experiment in democracy.

He ruled as a feudal-style absolute monarch, but called himself a democrat. He was a man who sang love songs at elaborate state dinners, brought his French poodle to peace talks, and charmed foreign dignitaries such as Jacqueline Kennedy.

He also painted, fielded a palace soccer team, composed music and led his own jazz band. His appetite extended to fast cars, food and women. He married at least five times ? some say six ? and fathered 14 children.

When the murderous Khmer Rouge seized power in the 1970s, he was reviled as their collaborator. Yet he himself ended up as their prisoner and lost five of his children to the regime. Later, in the 1990s ? after a U.N.-brokered deal to end Cambodia's long civil war ? he recast himself as a peacemaker and constitutional monarch.

In the twilight of his life, Sihanouk suffered colon cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Prince Sisowath Thomico, a royal family member who also was Sihanouk's assistant and nephew, said the former king passed away before dawn Monday.

"His death was a great loss to Cambodia," Thomico said, adding that Sihanouk had dedicated his life "for the sake of his entire nation, country and for the Cambodian people."

In 2004, Sihanouk abdicated the throne, citing his poor health. The move paved the way for his son Norodom Sihamoni to take his place.

On Monday, Sihamoni flew to China with Prime Minister Hun Sen to retrieve Sihanouk's body. State flags flew at half-staff, and Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said a week of official mourning would be held once the former king's body is repatriated on Wednesday. A cremation ceremony will be held in three months, according to Buddhist tradition.

While officials said they expect as many as 100,000 to line the route from the airport to the Royal Palace for the return of Sihanouk's body, the immediate reaction in the capital seemed muted, partly because it was a holiday, which took many people out of town.

One of those mourning was 67-year-old Yos Sekchantha, who said she offered prayers that his soul would rest in peace.

"I don't know much about politics, but the king father was really a good leader and cared about his county and people," she said as tears welled in her eyes.

Many Cambodians, though, are too young to have emotional bonds to a man who in the past two decades has been overshadowed by Hun Sen, the country's current political strongman.

In January, Sihanouk requested he be cremated in the Cambodian and Buddhist tradition. He asked that his ashes be put in an urn, preferably made of gold, and placed in a stupa at the Royal Palace.

Born Oct. 31, 1922, Sihanouk enjoyed a pampered childhood in French colonial Indochina. In 1941, the French crowned him king instead of other relatives closer in line to the throne because they thought the pudgy, giggling prince would be easy to control.

They were the first of many to underestimate him, and by 1953 the French were out.

In 1955, Sihanouk stepped down from the throne, organized a mass political party and went on to hold various positions as head of government and state.

Through those years, he steered Cambodia toward uneasy neutrality at the height of the Cold War and was a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement.

In 1965, he broke off relations with Washington as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War shifted into high gear. But by 1969, worried about increasing Vietnamese communist use of Cambodian soil, he made new overtures to America and turned away from China.

Sihanouk's top priority was to keep Cambodia out of the war, but he could not. U.S. aircraft bombed Vietnamese communist sanctuaries in Cambodia with increasing regularity, over his public protests. Privately, U.S. officials believed, he had given tacit permission for the attacks on Vietnamese communist sanctuaries near Cambodia's eastern border.

Internally, Cambodia was a one-man show. Sihanouk's sharpest critics accused him of running a medieval state as an ancient Khmer ruler reincarnated in Western dress.

"I am Sihanouk," he once said, "and all Cambodians are my children."

Indeed, many adored Sihanouk as a near-deity.

In 1970, though, Sihanouk was overthrown in a U.S.-backed coup that came while he was abroad on a trip that included a stay at a French weight-loss clinic. He spent years of lonely, if lavish, exile in Beijing.

Seeking to regain the throne, he joined the communist Khmer Rouge-dominated rebels after his overthrow. Only a few years earlier, his government had been suppressing them in the city and countryside.

They had numbered only a few hundred until the coup, but his presence gave them a legitimacy they had never before enjoyed.

The alliance left Sihanouk open to subsequent criticism that he opened the way for the Khmer Rouge holocaust. But his relations with the communist group were always strained.

"The Khmer Rouge do not like me at all, and I know that. Ooh, la, la ... It is clear to me," he said in a 1973 interview. "When they no longer need me, they will spit me out like a cherry pit."

When the Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975, Sihanouk returned home. But he was detained and the former rebels ordered his execution. Only the personal intervention of Chinese leader Zhou Enlai saved him.

With Sihanouk under house arrest in the Royal Palace, the Khmer Rouge ran an ultra-radical Maoist regime from 1975 to 1979, emptying the cities to create a vast network of forced labor camps. An estimated 1.7 million Cambodians were executed or died of disease and hunger under their rule.

Vietnam invaded in 1978 and toppled the Khmer Rouge. Freed as the Vietnamese advanced on Phnom Penh, Sihanouk found exile in Beijing and North Korea.

From there, he nominally headed an unlikely coalition of three guerrilla groups ? including his former Khmer Rouge captors ? fighting the Vietnamese-installed puppet government. The war lasted a decade.

Sihanouk remained a unifying figure, though, going on to lead the U.N.-supported interim structure that ran Cambodia until 1993 elections.

The same year, Sihanouk re-ascended the throne in a traditional Khmer coronation. Restored to his palace and travelling the countryside with personal bodyguards on loan from North Korea, he assumed a new role as beloved father of the country ? even though many adoring, older Cambodians expressed hope for a return of his previous direct rule.

But the bright promise of the elections soon faded.

Four years after the polls, Hun Sen launched a violent coup, and he remains in power to this day.

In the last years of his life, Sihanouk's profile and influence receded. While older people in the countryside still held him in reverence, the young generation regarded him as a figure of the past and one partly responsible for Cambodia's tragedy.

Rarely at a loss for words, he became for a time a prolific blogger, posting his musings on current affairs and past controversies. Most of his writing was literally in his own hand ? his site featured images of letters, usually in French in a cramped cursive script, along with handwritten marginalia to news clippings that caught his interest.

His production tailed off, however, as he retreated further from the public eye, spending more and more time under doctors' care in Beijing.

The hard-living Sihanouk had suffered ill health since the early 1990s. He endured cancer, a brain lesion and arterial, heart, lung, liver and eye ailments.

In late 2011, on his return from another extended stay in China, Sihanouk dramatically declared that he never intended to leave his homeland again. But true to his mercurial reputation, he flew off to Beijing just a few months later for medical care.

    OCT? 10, Wednesday
Cloudy, windy and rain later in the day!? A quiet day again, not much to report.? We went for our daily walk with Tucker, read, watched the tube and BBQ?ed steaks for dinner.? Peter and I did take a drive into town to meet Gaetan for coffee then came home.? We called everybody to confirm the get together this coming week-end. OCT? 11, Thursday
This was the coldest day yet even with the sun showing up once in a while; the temperature was only 10*C but the wind made it feel like 7*.? I went to get another tank of propane, $24. (the furnace is working a lot lately) and some groceries.? Peter got busy in the afternoon getting a few things more put away for the winter then him and I went to my sister Christiane to pick up a table for Saturday.? Val made a cabbage dish which turned out really good.? Peter served us apple pie and ice cream then we watched the tube for a while. OCT? 12, Friday, furnace problem
The wind was so strong overnight that we had to bring the awning up.? It is 4*C (36*F) at 8 am this morning, Brrrrrrrrrrrr!? The worst of it is that the furnace chose this morning to quit on us so out came the electric heater.? I called LUPIEN RV and when the tech arrived and took the furnace apart, he said he had to change the electronic monitor so took it with him to the shop.? In the mean time, we went into town to get some groceries then stopped at LUPIEN RV to put the repair on our extended warranty.? When we got home, the tech had already been here and put everything back in place so we now have HEAT!? LUPIEN called me saying that the warranty wouldn?t cover the call-out so they reduced it from $85 to $50 + our deductible of $50 on the warranty.? Pretty decent of them; they have been very fair and superb with us.? A lot of shops should learn from these guys about customer service!? Anyway, for dinner, Val made a mixture of pork & beans and pork chops which turned out delicious and as we looked out, it was snowing!? YES, SNOW! We couldn?t believe it however it didn?t last long.? Peter missed out on this dinner but did come over later for a drink. OCT? 13, Saturday, last Family reunion
We got up this morning to 0*C (32F)!? WOW, definitely time to move on!? It is sunny out though but cold most of the day.? Everyone began arriving for the party around 3 pm and it began right away.? Everyone was dressed up in costumes and we had a ball!? Too much to drink and lots of dancing, we ordered pizzas and French fries for dinner and had a feast.? The last person went home around midnight and Michel and Therese stayed at Peter?s house.? Val?s costume was a success thanks to Lise loaning it to her.? The whole family had fun and the evening was a success. OCT? 14, Sunday, hang-over!!!
Yes, a few of us had hang-over this morning but we were still smiling.? Another cold and cloudy day, it went as high as 9*C.? Everyone basically just sat and watched the tube.? We watched this guy (Can?t remember his name) who went up in a balloon up to 35 miles high then jump, broke the sound barrier and parachute to the ground.? Therese and Michel left around 3 pm after saying goodbyes and hugs.? Val made a stew for dinner.? It was to bed early tonight. 9 days to our departure
