Former UFC fighter Shamar Bailey injured fighting a fire

Shamar Bailey was a part of the thirteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," fought twice in the Octagon, and also fought for Strikeforce and Bellator. While he's still fighting, he also works as a firefighter in Indianapolis and was injured Monday when working on a fire that was the work of an arsonist.

Bailey talked about the fire to Bloody Elbow, and said his injuries were routine.

We had a big fire yesterday involving a three story house. It flashed over on us while we were cutting holes in the roof. While we were cutting the holes, there was an explosion. The fire and smoke heated up to a release point and exploded in our faces. Fortunately, we had our masks on, but I did get some exposure in my chest area and on my wrists, and that's where I'm burnt. We went ahead with business and put the fire out, and I actually didn't realize until afterwards that I had been burned.

The house was considered a total loss, and the Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating the arson. Bailey has a fight scheduled against Gideon Ray in December, and doesn't think the second-degree burns he sustained will keep him from fighting.

Bailey isn't the only fighter who moonlights as a firefighter. Retired UFC fighter Chris Lytle worked as a firefighter in Indianapolis throughout his long MMA career, and Eddie Wineland works as a firefighter, as well.

Spend fewer quarters on these cool ?80s arcade games for Android

I grew up in the 1980s and spent a ton of time and quarters at the arcade. This was our main form of gaming entertainment, since personal computers were not mainstream. It?s really neat to see some of the games getting ported to Android and other mobile devices. There are a lot of these classic arcade titles on Android. Maybe I will do another post or two on them, but for now here are the ones I have played and loved.

I have reviewed this Atari app before, but thought it was worth mentioning again. Atari?s Greatest Hits is free to download, and you have the option to acquire individual games for $0.99 or all of them for $9.99 through in-app purchases. Some of the games you can purchase are Asteroids, Centipede, Pong, and Super Breakout. It is the ultimate source of retro gaming.

You do get Missile Command for free with the app. In the game you have three bases and a number of cities you need to protect from falling missiles. You?re armed with a limited number of missiles, so you need to aim well. This was one of the first games I remember that utilized a trackball, and the app allows you customize the controls, including a trackball! The app also lets you pick the number of cities you start with and when you get a bonus. I am still pulled in by the game?s sounds, graphics and toughness.

Frogger is a fun and simple game. You are a frog and need to cross busy streets and rivers as fast as you can. Of course there are cars and trucks in your way. When you hit the river you need to hop across on passing turtles or logs. If you hit the water you are dead, which is odd. I guess this particular frog is allergic to being amphibious.

This version of the game is pretty good. There are three modes you can play: Regular, New Game or the Phantom Mode where you play against your high score. You can change the controls to either tap or slide; I found slide worked best. The game also has OpenFeint support for global high scores. There is a free version, which is ad-supported.

When people think of video games in the 1980s, most will immediately think of Pac-Man. For those who do not know, the goal for Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man is to go around the board and eat pellets. When all are cleared then you go to the next level. Now the ghosts are roaming the board looking to devour you, so you need to either eat (after ingesting a power pellet) or avoid them entirely.

This is a great port of the game, and the graphics and the sounds are just like I remember. To control Ms. Pac-Man, you simply swipe on the screen in the direction you want to go. There is a virtual joystick on the bottom of the screen, too. The game has three difficulty settings, leaderboards, 25 in-game achievements and a total of 256 levels. There is a free version of the game which is ad-supported and does not have as many levels or achievements.

Galaga was one of my favorite space shooters and this app, Galaxy Unknown, is a pretty stellar version of it. The objective of?Galaga is to destroy the oncoming aliens with your starfighter, which can only move left or right on the bottom of the screen and shoot vertically. So, you need to get skilled at dodging and hitting the aliens as they appear. My advice back then is the same today...stay out of the corners!

In terms of game options, you can turn the sound, music and vibrations on and off. But the two things I liked most were the controls and auto-fire. You can set up either tilt or touch controls to move the ship and can toggle auto-fire. I wish I had auto-fire when I was playing years ago. Both of these add to the enjoyment and challenge to the game. There is a free version of the app that is surprise, surprise, ad-supported.

Another mega hit in the ?80s was the puzzle game Tetris and EA Games?s version is well done. The objective of the game is to manipulate falling blocks by moving and rotating them to create a horizontal line of ten blocks without gaps.?When you complete a line it is removed and you earn points. Your game ends when the screen is filled to the top with mismatched blocks. As you get to higher levels, the game moves faster, thus making it harder to clear the screen.

This version has a lot of neat options to it. There are two main modes: Marathon, where you play until you cannot any longer and Magic, where you need to complete certain objectives to advance. With both modes there is an in-game leaderboard, so you can see how well you have done. In the options area, you can turn the tutorial, ghost PC, and sparkles on and off, depending on how much help you want. Also, there is a free version of the game.

If you are looking for some '80s retro gaming action, these apps should do the trick. Any particular ones you enjoy?

CDC Mulls Self-Evaluation; Fight Colorectal Cancer Sends Letter of ...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has proposed an evaluation of its federally funded Colorectal Cancer Control Program to determine whether the program does what is it supposed to do: Increase state-level colorectal cancer screening rates and other related outcomes.

The CDC began funding the Colorectal Cancer Control Program in 2009 for a five-year period. Through a competitive application process, 29 sites were chosen to establish evidence-based colorectal cancer screening programs for those 50-64 years of age of average risk and with low incomes and inadequate or no health insurance coverage for screening.

Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH
Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Fight Colorectal Cancer has been a longtime proponent of the Colorectal Cancer Control Program and has repeatedly?called upon Congress to provide enough funding to expand the program nationally. Since funding for many prevention programs are frequently at risk for cuts, a positive evaluation will be very useful when Fight Colorectal Cancer urges Congress to redouble its commitment to stopping cancer before it starts.

The evaluation will also inform other public health programs, since the Colorectal Cancer Control Program is the first cancer prevention and control program funded by the CDC that emphasizes both direct screening and screening promotion for the broader population.

On October 19, 2012, Fight Colorectal Cancer sent a letter to the Director of the CDC, Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, in support of the proposed evaluation. You can read the letter here.

AirBot and WaterBot help localize pollution data collection (video)

Want to do something about pollution in our water and air? Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Lab is working on a few interesting solutions to the problem of localizing pollution data with a trio of devices aimed at making the process accessible and affordable for regular people. First up is AirBot, a "particle counting robot" that monitors pollutants that can contribute to breathing problems like asthma. Aimed at a $99 price point, the little black boxes are portable enough to bring around with you, so you can, say, compare the air quality in areas when apartment hunting. The lab has made six prototype devices (one of which was on-hand during our visit), and is aiming to bring them to market next year.

WaterBot, meanwhile, is set to bring the solution to streams near you. Stick one end in a body of water near your home and it will upload water purity information to the web via a built-in ZigBee module. CREATE's also cooked up the Catfish, a method for recording such information in your home via, yes, your toilet. Dip one end in the reservoir and the box on top of the tank, and it will give you a reading of the cleanliness of the water being used to refill. That information can then be uploaded to the web via a USB port. The lab is shooting for a $50 price tag on the device.

The big thing here is the ability to let the community take its own readings to build a bigger picture of water and are purity levels through online applications. More information on all of the above devices can be found in the video below.

Washington soccer gets a dream match-up

With 14 sectional titles, a dozen trips to the state finals and three state championships to its credit, the Notre Dame boys soccer program?s success is hard for most teams to match.

But as far as Washington is concerned, you have to start somewhere. Even if somewhere is in the back yard of one of the state?s most successful teams.

Just days after claiming the first regional title in program history, the Panthers will look to claim their first sectional plaque against an Irish side seeking its third state title in five years. The two square off at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first of two semifinals at the Class 2A Notre Dame Sectional.

?We?re feeling good about what we?ve done,? said Washington coach Jeff Brooks, who guided his team to its first Mid-Illini Conference championship this fall.

?But we?ve been wanting this game for a long time.?

While the challenge may be great, the reward will be far greater should the Panthers pull off the upset.

And in what has been a season of firsts for Washington, the chance to play for a sectional title seems like a natural progression.

But despite their success this season, the Panthers aren?t overlooking anybody, especially the Irish.

?Obviously it?s our biggest game to date,? Brooks said. ?But we feel like if we play our best game we have a chance against anybody.?

SPEAKING OF ND: As usual, Notre Dame seems to be hitting its stride about the right time.

Not that the Irish ever lost it, but with an eight-game win streak that has produced a 40-4 difference in goals, the sectional hosts are rolling right along.

Statistically speaking, senior Drew Whalen has led the Irish offense with 28 goals and 21 assists.

Alex Garcia, the reigning JS Player of the Year, has been just as potent for ND with 18 goals and 25 assists. Fellow senior Ben Fiddes has contributed 14 goals and 19 assists.

The Irish defense, which has allowed 17 goals this season, has also posted ten shutouts.

PREPPED POTTERS: Confidence boosters can come in any number of ways.

And for a Morton side that has been struggling to find consistency this season, one may have come in the form of a loss.

Facing Notre Dame in the regular season finale for both teams, the Potters became one of a handful of teams to take a lead on the Irish when Jonah Greving scored in the 26th minute of play on Sept. 11th at ND.

That goal gave the Potters a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but the Irish responded with three goals after the break to get the nonconference victory.

Prior to that loss, the last time that the Potters were on the Irish? home field was in the 2010 sectional final.

In that game, the Potters took the nationally ranked Irish into overtime tied at 1-1 before an 87th-minute goal by Vince Cicciarelli gave the eventual Class 2A state champs the victory.

Having won its sixth regional title in seven years, the Potters will need to defeat Morris in order to set up a potential rematch with the Irish.

If they advance, the Potters would match their season-high win streak (three) while advancing to the sectional final for the third year in a row.

MORE ON MORRIS: The change to the three-class system has been both kind and harsh to the Redskins.

Since the change was initiated back in 2008, Morris has increased its regional title count from zero to three. But an 0-2 record in sectional play, with losses of 3-0 and 6-1, has been an issue thus far.

The Redskins are hoping that a diverse attack, led by Chava Villanueva and Ricardo Del Toro, could change that.
