Big gains on tap for small Royal Mail shareholders

LONDON (AP) — Small shareholders in Royal Mail have the opportunity to cash in on the stock's spectacular stock market debut.

Royal Mail shares first soared on Friday, when trading began, though only for big institutions and investors who bought through brokers. On Tuesday, trading was opened to the general public. That allows small shareholders who bought stock through the government to sell their shares — and pocket a near 50 percent windfall.

By midmorning Tuesday, Royal Mail shares were 2 percent higher at 484 pence. That's around 47 percent higher than the 330 pence the government initially priced the shares at.

The sharp rise has led some, particularly the opposition Labour Party, to argue that the government sold the near 500-year-old company too cheaply.

Obama presenting Medal of Honor to Afghan war vet

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Army captain hailed for bravery during combat in Afghanistan in 2009 is adding the Medal of Honor to his list of military decorations.

President Barack Obama will bestow the nation's highest military honor on William D. Swenson on Tuesday. Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama will also attend the ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

The White House says Swenson is being recognized for courageous actions while he was an embedded trainer and mentor with the Afghan National Security Forces in Kunar Province in northeastern Afghanistan on Sept. 8, 2009.

Swenson retired from the military in February 2011. He has a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal and lives in Seattle.

Column: Broncos Have No Reason To Apologize

Jacksonville was never going to be too much of a problem, except for those who love favorites and bet on the Denver Broncos against the biggest underdog in NFL history.

The bookies in Vegas were always a bit uncomfortable about the 27-point spread, though even they wouldn't have given odds that the Broncos would be reduced to pulling off a fake punt in the third quarter to get separation from a team that was supposed to have been blown off the field by halftime.

The problem with expectations is that they sometimes get too high to meet, even if you're Peyton Manning and seemingly can do no wrong. On Sunday, he did a lot wrong, fumbling twice and throwing a pick-6 that helped the winless Jaguars remain competitive even if they were never in any danger of actually winning.

The end result was a 35-19 victory that satisfied neither Denver's fans nor the bettors who have profited so far this year on the Broncos' bandwagon. It should also give pause to those so caught up in Manning's big start that they were beginning to look deep into the schedule to see what teams might be in the way of an undefeated season.

They don't need to look far. The Broncos travel to Indianapolis next weekend to face Manning's old team in a game that will tell us a lot more about Denver than anything that happened Sunday in Denver.

"People tell me it looks easy. There's nothing about it that's easy," Denver coach John Fox said. "There is resistance out there. It's called the other team."

The bookies still expect Denver to win, making the Broncos a 5½-point favorite against the Colts. They should also be favored in all their remaining games, especially with Von Miller, the key to their defense, coming back off suspension against Indy.

But the odds are they're not going to run the table. There will be times when they struggle, even if their fans have such high expectations that some actually booed the Broncos as they left the field with a 14-12 halftime lead.

"We've got high expectations, too," receiver Wes Welker said about the boos. "We understand it. We almost appreciate it. We've got to get into gear."

Indeed, the Broncos are victims somewhat of a remarkable start in which they averaged 46 points a game and topped 50 points their last two games before Sunday. The fact that they had to apologize for beating a fellow NFL team by more than two touchdowns was almost laughable, though apologize they did.

"It was good enough today but it's not good enough to win games down the road," said Knowshon Moreno, who had three second-half touchdown runs.

It won't be good enough to win at Indianapolis, that's for sure. Manning's return to the city he once owned will be the story line, but the Colts are a surprisingly good team with wins over the Seahawks and 49ers this season.

But while the Broncos were far from impressive against the Jags, it's hard to fault a team for scoring 35 points and winning by 16. They may have set the bar too high, but coming off a tremendous shootout against Dallas last week and with Indianapolis up next, this was a game where they didn't have to be razor sharp.

Don't forget, too, that while the Broncos are favored to win the Super Bowl, this was the Super Bowl for Jacksonville.

Yes, they may have been a tad overconfident against the hapless Jags. But it's a good bet they won't make the same mistake when it really counts.

"Three turnovers was tough and then had some things that just didn't execute as well," Manning said. "But some good things as well that we can learn from."

Manning called the win a good one over a team that isn't as bad as everyone thought. He said all the talk about the huge point spread motivated Jacksonville, and that he and his teammates didn't execute well most of the game.

The Broncos have gone an entire year without losing a regular-season game, dating to Oct. 7, 2012. That the streak could end at any time is something Manning understands better than most.

"It's not that easy to win football games," he said. "I learned early to never take winning for granted."

Not in the NFL. Not even against Jacksonville.

A win is a win, and Manning and the Broncos have nothing to apologize about.

Dealing With Default

So Republicans may have decided to raise the debt ceiling without conditions attached — the details still aren’t clear. Maybe that’s the end of that particular extortion tactic, but maybe not, because, at best, we’re only looking at a very short-term extension. The threat of hitting the ceiling remains, especially if the politics of the shutdown continue to go against the G.O.P.

So what are the choices if we do hit the ceiling?

Use Google Cloud Print to Quickly Save Files as PDFs on Your Mobile Devices

Use Google Cloud Print to Quickly Save Files as PDFs on Your Mobile DevicesChrome: Google Cloud Print is an under-rated, yet awesome service that lets you print wirelessly and remotely to any printer connected to the service. Beyond creating paper printouts, however, Cloud Print is also an awesome tool for sending content to remote devices, saving them as PDFs.

James Kendrick on ZDNet points out this handy, lesser-known feature. Once you enable Cloud Print (under Chrome's settings), all your phones and tablets that have the Chrome browser become "printers." So you can be browsing an article like this and "print" it to your iPad or Android phone, letting Cloud Print convert the page to a PDF file. I just tried this with my Nexus 7, and the web page instantly was sent to the SD card's download folder, under a new "ChromeSnapshots" subfolder. I also got a prompt for which app I wanted to open the PDF with.

If you have Cloud Print apps installed on your mobile devices (such as the Android Cloud Print or Print Central Pro for iOS), you can easily send content between your devices as well: from your Android tablet to the iPhone, for example.

Finally, Cloud Print also can save to Google Drive, converting any content that can be opened in the Chrome browser to PDF and sending it to that online storage space.

Airbus sales chief aims to hit 750 plane orders in 2013

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - The sales chief at EADS unit Airbus said on Monday the aircraft maker can sell 750 jets this year, confirming the top end of a 700-750 sales range the company has previously announced. He added that he expected "a good year but not a great year in terms of orders" in 2013.

Alcoa profit rises; CEO won't speculate on asset sales

(Reuters) - Alcoa Inc , the largest U.S. aluminum producer, reported a higher quarterly profit on Monday as its raw materials segments improved even as prices sagged, but lower-than-expected revenue and an uncertain outlook dragged down the company's share price. Stubbornly low aluminum prices have weighed on the company's business of mining bauxite, refining it into alumina and smelting alumina to produce aluminum.

Greens ask U.S. to delay Keystone decision after Arkansas leak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Environmental groups on Monday asked the Obama administration to extend the approval process of the Keystone XL pipeline, using last month's spill of heavy Canadian crude oil in Arkansas as their latest reason to delay the project. The Obama administration is deciding whether to approve the Canada-to-Nebraska leg of TransCanada Corp's proposed pipeline, which would link Canada's oil sands, the world's third richest crude oil deposit, to refineries in Texas.

They did not have permission to speak with the media.

Cloudy outlook makes Canadian companies shy of investment

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian businesses see a challenging year ahead after surviving the weakest two quarters of growth since the 2008-09 recession, and they expect only modest sales growth, cautious investment, and tame inflation, a Bank of Canada poll showed on Monday. The results of the survey of senior managers, taken from mid-February to mid-March, support market expectations that the central bank is under no pressure to raise interest rates.

Exclusive: Princeling-backed firm eyes $500 million China buyout fund - sources

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Nepoch Capital, a new private equity firm founded by the son of a former member of China's politburo, has launched the first 'princeling' fundraising since the new government took power last month vowing to clamp down on cronyism and nepotism. China's so-called princelings, the sons and daughters of the country's elite, have a long association with private equity funds, and their investments - and sometimes bumper profits from a swift exit from lucrative initial public offerings - have drawn accusations of favoritism and corruption.

HSBC says margins to boost Gulf's use of Chinese yuan

DUBAI (Reuters) - Changing trading patterns and pressure to improve profit margins will boost the Gulf's use of the Chinese yuan in coming years, the head of banking giant HSBC's China operations said on Monday. Gulf Arab countries have lagged many other parts of Asia in using the yuan because their oil exports to China are denominated in U.S. dollars and most of their currencies are pegged to the dollar.
