Debates in chat - impossible or just difficult?

I like to have debates about a number of different subjects. You know, the kind where people take a standpoint, provide evidence for it, and other people do the same from an opposing standpoint. Points and counter-points are made until either a consensus is reached or there is an agreement to 'agree to disagree'.

I also prefer to have debates on the chat, as they prove more interactive. However, it seems very difficult to actually get an intelligent debate going. I find that people aren't able to offer up intelligent points and counter-points, and instead just make statements with no supporting evidence. Now, I'm not expecting valid sources in Harvard format or whatever, or a well-written essay in a debate; anecdotal evidence suffices for a 'leisurely' debate.

So, why is it so difficult to get any kind of intelligent debate? Is it a skill people aren't taught any more? Surely critical thinking and communication is a vital skill for life? If people enter into a debate, shouldn't they be willing to do so intelligently? If asked to back up their statements, shouldn't they be able to?

What do you people think?
