Pondering my search for wisdom

?

??????????? I started my day a bit later than normal being out from school and trying to get over a summer cold and my plans include yard work, writing and a finishing up several pieces of my graduate portfolio later today so I was lazy. I ran by my second most favorite store Quick Trip to grab a morning grapefruit cranberry drink and newspaper. I had planned on picking up a few parts to work on my old Isuzu at the auto parts store and shock of all shocks it was closed as I pulled in which is unheard of at seven o?clock in the morning. I forget not all people live by my sunrise to sunset standard. So I went on about the day but somehow ended up at one of my favorite stores Kroger to pick up things for dinner so I would not have to travel out and could get serious about paper work.

On the front page of today?s paper the lead story was how high school graduates are not ready for college and right next to it was an article on an assistant principal who is being investigated in Atlanta?s school system cheating scandal claiming she did not know they were cheating only cleaning up eraser marks so testing machines would not err. One comment was essentially in Georgia twenty five percent of the graduates have to take remedial courses in college. As I thought about this pondering as I do I recalled I too took a remedial language arts course my freshmen year in college. Actually took it twice since the first time I did not go to class very often.

??????????? Why did I have to take a remedial college course and yet I was accepted into all three colleges I applied too. My SAT was a few points too low for the school I applied too on the verbal portion and yet today it would be more than enough to get into any college without remedial classes. As I think to my days in High School Literature with the exception of maybe one or two years I hated it and could not understand why we needed to listen to a teachers opinion on why Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick. As I think back I really did not like Math classes, Spanish classes and all but one science class. Considering we had math, literature and science all four years of High School I really did not like high school and perhaps my GPA reflected this. Even though my SAT scores were what got me into college and conversely in a remedial class, my saving grace in education was standardized tests which I seemed to always do well on. My first set of SAT scores were in today?s terms over 1300 for verbal and Math which really would get me into most undergraduate schools shy of Ivy League today.? The second time I took SAT I decided I would see how fast I could actually take the test and in twenty three minutes had completed the SAT and scored only a few points lower than my previous test.

??????????? So where am I wandering today. My conclusion that I came to after reflecting on my own High School experience and many kids I talk with in High School today is that we are teaching subjects that many consider irrelevant to them, even kids going to college. Some students will strive and get high grades acquiring the content that is provided so they take End of Course Tests and do great. But as I look at High school subject matter and even the photo used in explaining how deficient students today are in Math I looked at the problem on the board behind the teacher being interviewed and in real life shy of being in physics or math as a job you will never see that material.? Learning is what is missing from education today. It is about that desire to learn and making it relevant to students who more than likely do not even want to be in that class. So how do we get teachers on board that have been brought up in the same system?

?The awakened sages call a person wise when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results; all his selfish desires have been consumed in the fire of knowledge. The wise, ever satisfied, have abandoned all external supports. Their security is unaffected by the results of their action; even while acting, they really do nothing at all. Free from expectations and from all sense of possession, with mind and body firmly controlled by the Self, they do not incur sin by the performance of physical action.? Bhagavad Gita 4:19-21

?

??????????? I can easily substitute learning and wisdom as I read through this ancient passage from a Hindu holy text. It is a matter of who you are with and when and how you have been told is this learning? But as I read this passage many years old a person is wise when what you do is done without anxiety about results. You are not concerned about your grade or what college or who has the highest GPA. We sadly live in a competitive world where being number one is even a marketing tool for advertisers. I often wonder if politicians get stressed out, other than around elections over what they do. I always thought of my grandmother as wise for her understanding of life. As a small child perhaps I saw only that her knowledge was what she needed to know to raise her children justly and correctly and how to make really good chocolate chip cookies. As I grew up there was a different understanding on my part of her deep faith and wisdom maybe one day I can possible come close too?

?

?This we can all bear witness to, living as we do plagued by unremitting anxiety?.It becomes more and more imperative that the life of the spirit be avowed as the only firm basis upon which to establish happiness and peace.? The Dalai Lama

?

As a society we seem to encourage anxiety and stress often at the expense of our children and grandchildren. Our previous elected government pushed to spread democracy through numerous wars and our current government has continued and added a war or two to the pot which has caused a tension and insecurity in our children according to Progressive Curriculum Theorist Henry Giroux. Is it turning to a deeper meaning a spiritual center as ?the only firm base? as The Dalai Lama states.

?

?If I have been of service, if I have glimpsed more of the nature and essence of ultimate well, if I am inspired to reach wider horizons of thought and action, if I am at peace with myself, it has been a successful day.? Alex Noble

?

How many of us take this approach to life I use often the term of being a searcher in that I am always searching. When walking in the forest I have the urge to check under rocks could be the unrelenting herpetologist in me searching for a snake or lizard. As I sit or stand in the hallway at school observing, searching faces, listening, empathizing and trying to understand.

?

?To understand reality is not the same as to know about outward events. It is to perceive the essential nature of things. The best-informed man is not necessarily the wisest. Indeed there is a danger that precisely in the multiplicity of his knowledge he will lose sight of what is essential. But on the other hand, knowledge of an apparently trivial detail quite often makes it possible to see into the depth of things. And so the wise man will seek to acquire the best possible knowledge about events, but always without becoming dependent upon this knowledge. To recognize the significant in the factual is wisdom.? Dietrich Bonheoffer

?

I used a statement several weeks back about seeing the bubble in a thousand clear oceans. Bonheoffer addresses that same issue here. In education it is about context not content, that is being able to apply what knowledge we have and that can be more significant than an encyclopedia of information.

?

?I do not want the peace that passeth understanding. I want the understanding which bringeth peace.? Helen Keller

?

Many the times, I will sit and think about people I would like to meet. My biological grandfather on my mother?s side is one, Gandhi another and Ralph Waldo Emerson but if I was allowed another it would be Helen Keller. There are few people who have overcome such insurmountable odds and then accomplish what she did. The title to the book about her life does not do justice to the real life situation, The Miracle Worker.

?

?It is characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.? Henry David Thoreau

?

I need to be more cautious as I write, yesterday Thoreau was searching for clam rather than calm, spell check does not read minds as of yet. But Thoreau eludes back to that thousand plus year old statement from the Bhagavad Gita,?when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results?. Being wise is being in tune so to say with all around and to borrow another word perhaps harmony could be used.

?

?Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.? Immanuel Kant

?

In education there are in The Georgia Performance Standards points of reference in each subject to attain or to have knowledge of. Georgia had a system in place of Quality Core Curriculum which literally was each and every aspect of what the educational committee thought was important in that subject. Teachers were teaching to QCC?s and it was almost purely content. There was excitement as standards came out and the school curriculum people got hold and unpacked and now we have curriculum maps and curriculum pacing and what was to be wonderful has become a monster. The heart and soul has been stripped out and in its place organizational overload.

?

?Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.? Lin Yutang

?

I have several times used my example of a liter bottle and having three gallons to put in it, how do we do it? A funnel still only fills to a liter and the rest spills out. I use this illustration in educating special needs kids and I believe it applies to all children and adults. It has been a few months since my last trip to Mountain City and the Foxfire property. I am heading up in a week or so. If you are in Mountain City Georgia take a look it is well worth the drive up the mountain. The museum will provide a guide to take you around. I recall the late Robert Murray and numerous walks with him around the property, here and there he would pick a plant leave or three or four telling about what they could do and what they can be used for.

As he would go building to building explaining mountain life he eventually gets to a shed with a large copper coil sort of device and asks ?So what is it? and answers run the gambit? Finally laughing he explains it is a condenser for making moonshine. If you have watched the miniseries Hatfield and McCoy?s you will know. So how do we fill a liter bottle? We condense and we synthesize and much like making cane syrup we boil the cane juice down to get the good stuff. Wisdom is knowing what is the good stuff and being able to transcend the frills and extras.

?

?The perfection of wisdom, and the end of true philosophy is to proportion our wants to our possessions, our ambitions to our capacities, we will then be a happy and a virtuous people.? Mark Twain

?

Make that number five on my list of people who I would like to meet somehow Mark Twain could always have the right words and thoughts. As I meander about today searching for books and ideas, tilling in my garden and planting plants I will end with a line from a founding father and one maybe our current in power folks should read.

?

?I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be.? Thomas Jefferson

?

I hope we will listen to Jefferson please keep all in harm?s way on your mind and in your hearts and be sure to always give thanks.

Wireless startup LightSquared files for bankruptcy | Indonesia

LightSquared Inc., which hoped to create an independent wireless broadband network in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday.

Regulators blocked its plan this winter because of concerns that its transmissions would interfere with GPS navigation.

LightSquared hasn?t given up. Chief Financial Officer Marc Montagner said in a statement that the bankruptcy filing is intended to gain the company ?breathing room? while it continues to work through its regulatory issues.

It has said that it has invested more than $4 billion in the network. LightSquared listed assets and liabilities of more than $1 billion each in the filing Monday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The company, which is based in Reston, Virginia, is owned by Harbinger Capital Partners, a private-equity firm that made billions betting against subprime mortgages ahead of the collapse of the housing market.

Harbinger bought SkyTerra, a provider of satellite communications services to businesses, in 2010. It then lobbied the Federal Communications Commission to allow it to use the spectrum set aside for SkyTerra for ground-based communications ? essentially, a conventional wireless broadband network, rather than a satellite-based one.

But SkyTerra?s licenses were for spectrum adjacent to a band used by GPS satellites. On the ground, GPS units had no problem filtering out transmissions from SkyTerra?s satellites, but regulators determined that they could be disrupted by strong, ground-based signals.

LightSquared?s CEO, telecom veteran Sanjiv Ahuja, resigned in February.

The company?s largest creditors are Boeing Satellite Systems Inc., owed $7.5 million, and telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent, owed $7.3 million, according to the filing.

Justin Bieber Battery Case Against Paparazzo Could Be Sent To Prosecutors

'Nothing has been presented yet, but there is a possibility it will be,' says a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County D.A.'s office.

Justin Bieber may end up having his day in court if police decide to refer his case of criminal battery
to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office for possible criminal prosecution.

Though a spokesperson for the D.A.'s office told MTV News on Tuesday (May 29) that nothing has been presented yet, that doesn't mean action isn't coming. "There is a possibility it will be," said spokesperson Shiara Davila-Morales. TMZ reported that the case will be referred for possible prosecution after Bieber was allegedly involved in an altercation with an unnamed paparazzi photographer on Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of a mall in Calabasas, California. Citing unnamed sources, the site reported that police investigating the case have already decided to refer the case to prosecutors, even though they are still in the midst of the investigation.

In addition to witnesses, the police are eager to interview Bieber, 18, who has been unavailable so far because he is on a promotional jaunt to Norway.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Lieutenant Margarito Robles told MTV News that the investigation is ongoing and that there was no update on its progress at press time. He also noted that a large percentage of these kinds of cases do get presented to the D.A.'s office, where it is left up to prosecutors to decide how, or if, to proceed.

Bieber is a suspect in a criminal battery investigation after he got into it with the photographer, who was reportedly attempting to snap a shot of Bieber when a physical altercation took place between them.

The photographer called 911 after the incident, but when the police arrived Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had already left the scene. The camera man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain in his upper torso and released a short time later. He filed a police report naming Bieber as the culprit and police are now investigating the incident as a misdemeanor battery case and are looking to speak to Bieber, Gomez and other witnesses. It has not yet been reported what injuries the photog allegedly suffered or what took place during the scuffle.

A spokesperson for Bieber had no comment on the incident. According to TMZ, if Bieber is charged and convicted, he could face up to six months in jail. But, given the chronic overcrowding in Los Angeles jails and a federal mandate to ease that overpopulation, it's unlikely that the singer would spend much time behind bars if convicted.

Is 3D the Next Big Thing in Online Gambling?

  • Business | 29th May, 2012 | London, UK | 3D Technology ? Video
  • The use of 3D technology was limited to cinema until some time back. With advancement in multimedia and visual graphics, 3D has found use in other entertainment aspects like gaming. The technology is making inroads into games such as Poker and Bingo too. But to how much a difference can it make in gaming as serious as Gambling is a wait and watch.

3D Online GamingWhat is 3D technology? It is computer graphics that generates and projects three dimensional objects into a two dimensional space like the screen of your monitor or TV or movie theatre (all of which have only two real dimensions ? height and width). As opposed to 2D graphics where pixels only have position, colour and brightness, 3D pixels add depth and support the interaction of multiple objects with one another. When many such pixels come together, it results in texture and gives a realistic image. Currently, many movies like the hugely successful Avatar and Toy Story have used 3D technology to enhance the illusion of depth of perception, the reason why Titanic is back in 3D.

Thanks to this advancement in technology, one can be tricked into believing that the flat computer screen is actually a series of rooms, extending one beyond the other or the game being played is almost like a real life experience. Naturally then, the use of 3D in media has better response from Audience. Many Companies have successfully used 3D in print advertisements to bring in the real feeling. With better response, better recall and improved engagement with the brand advertised.

To say that use of 3D technology in Gaming has been existent for a while is an understatement. Game programmers have been making use of this technology to create simulated environments which replicate the real world in depth and illusions. The gaming specific to the gambling industry, however, has only recently been introduced to the 3D. Until now, online gambling sites have been content with 2-dimensional designs but owing to the enhanced user experience, more such sites have begun opting for 3D in their design elements.

3D has made its way to online poker sites as far as main stream gambling is considered. The poker site to have first introduced the real and fully customised 3D is PKR Poker, which was released in 2006. Today, Ladbrokes Poker and 888 Poker, along with PKR Poker are leading the use of 3D in their games. The trend seems to have caught on in the online bingo industry too and Bingo3X, a brand new online bingo site, is at the forefront.

Just launched online bingo site Bingo3X has used 3D to build their brand story through their brand mascots which are 3D Characters. These characters feature an array of stunningly funny expressions and are able to perform actions that are very close to real life. The Site is bringing these Characters in the form of funny videos and comic strips that would connect with their audience just like The Simpsons or Tom & Jerry. The Characters further have full blown social profiles on Facebook making them more real and live.

Thanks to this real and virtual interaction, the gaming site has been able to make a strong social and emotional connect with its players entertaining them more than ever. Considering the competition in the bingo industry, this is a brilliant marketing move by the guys at Bingo3X. They are doing all things right to stand out of the box!

Google Apps For Business Gets ISO 27001 Certification | TechCrunch

Google just announced that its Google Apps for Business service has earned ISO 27001 certification. This certifies that Google is following the standard ISO information security management protocols and best practices ?for the systems, technology, processes and data centers serving Google Apps for Business.?

If you?re a startup or individual user, chances are you don?t care too much about whether a company you are working with is following any of the ISO?s over 19,000 standards. This certification, however, will likely give larger and more highly regulated businesses (and the executives who sign off on these deals) the necessary reassurances that moving to Google?s cloud solutions is safe.

This ISO 27001 certification, which was certified by Ernst & Young CertifyPoint, an ISO certification body accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council, follows Google?s previous FISMA certification for its Google Apps for Government product. Google also regularly submits itself to third-party audits according to the SSAE 16 / ISAE 3402 standard, which is quite comparable to the ISO 27001 standard.

It?s important to note, though, that this certification is not a security ?seal of approval,? as security consultant Alec Muffett told Computer World UK?s Anh Nguyen, and does not ?guarantee that the applications are 100% secure.? Instead, says Muffett, companies that apply for ISO 27001 certification get ? to design their own high-jump bar, document how tall it is and what it is made of, how they intend to jump over it and then they jump over it.?

Google?s Eran Feigenbaum, the company?s director of security for its Google Enterprise group, believes that ?businesses are beginning to realize that companies like Google can invest in security at a scale that?s difficult for many businesses to achieve on their own.? While most of Google?s competitors focus on getting their data centers certified, it?s worth noting that Google also argues that its certification is broader and also includes its networking infrastructure and applications.

Given that all of this isn?t the most exciting news in the world ? especially not on a national holiday in the U.S. ? here is a video of Feigenbaum, who is also a mentalist ? playing Russian Roulette with a nail gun:

Despite downgrade, Beryl still soaks Memorial Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Joyce Connolly and her daughters left their home in Hurricane, W.Va., to head south for a Memorial Day beach vacation ? and ended up in the center of Tropical Storm Beryl.

While it left little damage after sweeping ashore with 70 mph winds around midnight Sunday at Jacksonville, Fla., the storm still wrecked much of Connolly's trip. She skipped a graduation ceremony because powerful winds kept her and her daughters from venturing past the beach boardwalk when the storm approached Sunday. She also postponed their drive home Monday as Beryl, downgraded to a tropical depression, continued to dump rain near the Georgia-Florida state line.

"It definitely changed our vacation to unfortunate circumstances that we're not happy with. But you just have to live with it," said Connolly, who at least found the irony of her hometown's name "pretty funny."

Beach trips, backyard barbecues and graveside Memorial Day observances got a good soaking in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.

Beach lifeguards turned swimmers away from the ocean because of dangerous rip currents from Jacksonville to Tybee Island, Georgia's largest public beach 140 miles to the north. Skip Sasser, who oversees the island's lifeguards as its fire chief, said beach traffic was unusually thin for a holiday. The ocean was declared off-limits to swimmers for a second day in a row.

"It's been raining intermittently, so it's chased a lot of them off," Sasser said. "There was a lot of traffic this morning heading westbound out of Tybee."

Veterans groups, meanwhile, carried out outdoor Memorial Day ceremonies despite the grim forecast.

At Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery ? made famous by the book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" ? American Legion members worked through a downpour to make sure its plot for veterans had a small American flag planted by each headstone.

"When we were setting up, I had a different shirt on and I got soaked to the skin. My socks and my underwear probably are, too," said Jim Grismer, commander of American Legion Post 135 in Savannah. "I had so many people trying to talk me into moving it inside. But I said then you can't have the live firing salute and the flag raising."

The rain paused just as a crowd of about 100 people began arriving. Robert Schulz, an 80-year-old who served in the Marines in the Korean War, held a folded umbrella in one hand as he saluted with the other during the service. Schulz said he and his wife briefly considered skipping the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.

"I said it would be terrible if nobody showed up," Barbara Schulz said. "We had to come for our veterans."

Aside from ruining holiday plans, the rain was welcome on the Georgia coast for bringing some relief from persistent drought. According to the state climatologist's office, as of May 1, rainfall in Savannah was 15 inches below normal for the past 12 months.

Emergency officials said minor flooding was reported near the coast, but the ground was quickly soaking up the water. And the winds had died down considerably.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Ray Parker, emergency management director for coastal McIntosh County south of Savannah, who said the worst damage came by trees falling on two homes overnight. "We were lucky that we didn't get 3 to 4 inches in 30 minutes. Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

The rainfall stopped in Savannah and other northern parts of the Georgia coast Monday afternoon, but more was expected through Tuesday. A frontal system moving south from the Great Lakes is expected to cause the storm do a U-turn and push it back out to sea.

Streets in Jacksonville Beach were unusually vacant. Bands of blinding rain alternated with dry conditions.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beaches' American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, said he was coordinating safety procedures with local government officials. The beach was closed, but before it was on Sunday, lifeguards over and over again had to warn people to get out of the water, he said.

"Now that the storm's finally onshore and people can see that it's so dangerous and the winds and the current are up, people are lot more hesitant to go in, more so than yesterday," Anderson said.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said much progress was made repairing Beryl's damage, including removing trees and restoring power to homes and businesses.

"We're very fortunate this did not become a hurricane," he said. "If it had been a couple of months later, we could have had a Category 3 hurricane."

In northeast Florida, several Memorial Day events were canceled, including one honoring veterans at the St. Augustine National Cemetery and a parade in Palatka.

"I don't mean to sound mushy, but today is Memorial Day and I hate that it ruined some plans," said Glynn County, Ga., emergency management director Jay Wiggins. "But that's just the nature of the weather."

Radioactive bluefin tuna crossed the Pacific to US

New research found increased levels of radiation in Pacific bluefin tuna caught off the coast of Southern California. Scientists said the radiation found in the fish came from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant that was crippled by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. (AP Photo/Chris Park, File)

(AP) ? Across the vast Pacific, the mighty bluefin tuna carried radioactive contamination that leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant to the shores of the United States 6,000 miles away ? the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance.

"We were frankly kind of startled," said Nicholas Fisher, one of the researchers reporting the findings online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The levels of radioactive cesium were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off the California coast in previous years. But even so, that's still far below safe-to-eat limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Previously, smaller fish and plankton were found with elevated levels of radiation in Japanese waters after a magnitude-9 earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors.

But scientists did not expect the nuclear fallout to linger in huge fish that sail the world because such fish can metabolize and shed radioactive substances.

One of the largest and speediest fish, Pacific bluefin tuna can grow to 10 feet and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They spawn off the Japan coast and swim east at breakneck speed to school in waters off California and the tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Five months after the Fukushima disaster, Fisher of Stony Brook University in New York and a team decided to test Pacific bluefin that were caught off the coast of San Diego. To their surprise, tissue samples from all 15 tuna captured contained levels of two radioactive substances ? ceisum-134 and cesium-137 ? that were higher than in previous catches.

To rule out the possibility that the radiation was carried by ocean currents or deposited in the sea through the atmosphere, the team also analyzed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis. They found no trace of cesium-134 and only background levels of cesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

The results "are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source," said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who had no role in the research.

Bluefin tuna absorbed radioactive cesium from swimming in contaminated waters and feeding on contaminated prey such as krill and squid, the scientists said. As the predators made the journey east, they shed some of the radiation through metabolism and as they grew larger. Even so, they weren't able to completely flush out all the contamination from their system.

"That's a big ocean. To swim across it and still retain these radionuclides is pretty amazing," Fisher said.

Pacific bluefin tuna are prized in Japan where a thin slice of the tender red meat prepared as sushi can fetch $24 per piece at top Tokyo restaurants. Japanese consume 80 percent of the world's Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna.

The real test of how radioactivity affects tuna populations comes this summer when researchers planned to repeat the study with a larger number of samples. Bluefin tuna that journeyed last year were exposed to radiation for about a month. The upcoming travelers have been swimming in radioactive waters for a longer period. How this will affect concentrations of contamination remains to be seen.

Now that scientists know that bluefin tuna can transport radiation, they also want to track the movements of other migratory species including sea turtles, sharks and seabirds.

rick santorum ozzie guillen castro comments phish gluten free diet barry zito mac virus santorum drops out

Technological savvy part of senior's drive to help others

ST. CHARLES ? Brian Ricketts had no trouble falling in love with robots.

After all, as he tells it, robotics have become an essential part of his life.

?There aren?t many people that can say they have a microprocessor in their leg,? Ricketts said, with a sly grin.

For as long as he can remember, Ricketts, a graduating senior at St. Charles North High School, has been fascinated by computers, the technological devices they power and the way they run.

At the age of 7 or 9, he began programming computers.

And those speaking with the young man or his mother, Julie Ricketts, of St. Charles, easily could be overwhelmed by the tales they might share of the tinkering Brian has done with household appliances and devices.

His mother noted, for instance, that his favorite toy when he was 2 years old was a surge suppressor.

Lately, those urges have turned to video games, which Brian creates himself, and gaming systems, which he might take apart and rewrite some code to make it do things it otherwise could not.

He reprogrammed a Microsoft Xbox Kinect system to allow users to ?fly? a virtual aircraft by moving their hands or speaking commands.

?It?s how I like to spend my free time,? Ricketts said.

So when the opportunity arose for Ricketts to join the competitive robotics team, PWNAGE Team 2949, sponsored by St. Charles manufacturer Genesis Automation, he did not think on the decision too long.

?I used to be in the Boy Scouts, and I tried piano lessons,? said Ricketts. ?But then I found robotics. And I thought, ?This is where I belong.??

Ricketts joined the team in his senior year, becoming one of the later members of a group that is interested and skilled in engineering, computer programming and other disciplines related to robotics.

The team takes its robots to regional competitions against those designed by other high school teams in task-based contests.

Teams were judged this year on their robots? abilities to move about a playing court, pick up foam basketballs and throw them through small basketball hoops.

Ricketts helped program the robot and said he loved every minute of the work and the competition.

Marsha Brown, technology and engineering instructor at St. Charles North, said Ricketts? infatuation with robotics should not be a surprise to anyone.

?There are things I?m learning from him,? Brown said. ?With the programming, and the things he?s able to do, it?s just nuts sometimes.?

In a class project earlier this year, students were asked to create a machine that could accurately launch ping-pong balls.

Ricketts? team created an accurate launcher. But then they went further, making their machine mobile.

?It did shock me when it moved around the room, because no one had told me,? Brown said.

Ricketts still laughs about that project.

?You should have seen the look on her face,? he said, chuckling.

Brown said Ricketts? penchant for exceeding expectations, along with his knowledge and ability, is what sets him apart.

?He is just so knowledgable about these things,? Brown said. ?So passionate and so driven.?

Ricketts, however, demonstrated his drive in more than just robotics projects or at-home tinkering.

At age 6, he was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg. Despite treatment, the cancer spread to his knee. Ultimately, doctors amputated his leg at the thigh.

Not until about two years ago, after a fight that lasted almost a decade, did doctors declare the cancer in remission.

In the years since the amputation, Ricketts learned to walk with a prosthesis, including a recent model that includes technology to help prevent him from falling.

?So I guess you can say I have experience with a robot on my knee,? he said with a grin.

Ricketts enrolled at DePaul University and will attend classes in the fall. He will major in computer science.

He said he has not decided yet how he wants to use his technological abilities, although he did mention a fascination with virtual reality and autonomous automobiles. And he wasn?t averse to defense applications, he said.

?That would be kind of cool, maybe working with drones,? Ricketts said.

No matter what he does, Ricketts said he wants his work to focus on one thing:

?I want to make technologies to make people?s lives easier. It?s so important to me.?

Kansas governor signs bill to ban Islamic law

Republican Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a bill aimed at keeping state courts and agencies from using Islamic or other non-U.S. laws when making decisions, his office said on Friday, drawing criticism from a national Muslim group.

The law has been dubbed the "Shariah bill" because critics say it targets the Islamic legal code. Shariah, or Islamic law, covers all aspects of Muslim life, including religious obligations and financial dealings. Opponents of state bans say they could nullify wills or legal contracts between Muslims.

Supporters said the law will reassure foreigners in Kansas that state laws and the U.S. Constitution would protect them. Opponents said it singled out Muslims for ridicule and was unnecessary because American laws prevail on U.S. soil.

Sherriene Jones-Sontag, a spokeswoman for the governor, said in an e-mail that the bill "makes it clear that Kansas courts will rely exclusively on the laws of our state and our nation when deciding cases and will not consider the laws of foreign jurisdictions."

South Dakota lawmakers tackle 'Shariah question'

Legislators supporting the bill said there were many cases around the country where judges or state agencies cited Shariah law in deciding cases, especially involving divorce-related custody and property matters where Islamic code differs from U.S. law.

    'Islam-phobia'
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington denounced the Kansas law and said it is considering legal action.

Hate crime? Iraqi woman's death in Calif. has Muslims wondering

About 20 states have considered similar legislation but the Kansas law is the only one signed in recent weeks, council spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.

"It's unfortunate the governor chose to pander to the growing Islam-phobia in our society that has led to introduction of similar unconstitutional and un-American legislation in dozens of state legislatures," Hooper said.

Video: Anti-Muslim sentiment on the rise in U.S. (on this page)

Hooper said legislators have often referred to Shariah law in supporting such legislation, but he said they take the word out of the bill to stave off legal challenges. The Kansas bill does not mention Shariah.

Federal courts struck down an Oklahoma law voters approved in 2010 that barred state judges from considering Shariah law in making decisions. The court called the law discriminatory.

NCAA Softball Super Regional 2012: ASU Slugs Way To Win, Forces Decisive Game 3 Tonight

Amber Freeman's first inning two-run home run (Photo: Brad Denny)

Following their thorough defeat in Game 1 of their Super Regional match-up against Louisiana-Lafayette, the defending national champion Arizona State Sun Devils had their backs against the wall. Needing a pair of wins on Friday night to advance to the Women's College World Series, ASU turned to pitcher Hillary Bach and hoped their offense could spring to life in order to keep their title reign alive beyond this Game 2.

They didn't have to wait long for an answer.

The Sun Devils started Bach after Game 1 starter Dallas Escobedo was roughed up for six runs in last night's loss, bringing her career ERA against ULL to a staggering 5.83. Bach had a daunting task, facing the Ragin' Cajuns No. 1 ranked offense.

Opposing her in Game 2 was not Jordan Wallace, who shut down the ASU offense to just a pair of hits, but the equally prolific Ashley Brignac, who entered the game with a 23-3 record and a 2.02 ERA.

The Sun Devils wasted no time in taking advantage of this change, as ASU was the designated away team in Game 2. Player of the Year finalist Katelyn Boyd lead off the game with a single, and after two outs, cleanup hitter Amber Freeman unleashed a bomb that tucked juuuuuust inside the left field foul pole to give ASU the early 2-0 lead.

Now with some momentum, the Sun Devils struck the big blow two innings later. After Boyd and Alix Johnson reached to open the third, Haley Steele laced a double to the right center field gap that plated both runners. Two batters later, the struggling Annie Lockwood absolutely crushed a Brignac pitch over the scoreboard in left field to make it a 6-0 Sun Devil lead. For good measure, Sam Parlich joined the longball party, driving a pitch deep to the opposite field that just cleared the right center field wall for a solo home run that capped a five run inning for ASU.

Perhaps inspired by seeing so many runners cross home plate, the Ragin' Cajuns strung together some baserunners and scored a run on a Brianna Cherry single, but Bach registered a key strikeout before any further damage could be done. In fact, that damage was undone in the next half-inning, when a bases loaded walk got the run back for ASU, and if not for a great diving catch by left fielder Katie Smith, the Sun Devils would have had many more.

By this point, the game would never be in doubt, but for good measure, Parlich hit her second home run of the night to extend it to 9-2. Those two home runs were a pleasant surprise, as Parlich had just a single long ball during the regular season.

Bach was efficient, scattering eight Cajun hits and stranding eight runners on base, while only surrendering one earned run.

With nine runs on ten hits, including four home runs, will the ASU offense roll momentum into Game 3, or will they struggle against Wallace again? The decisive third game of the series with a trip to the Women's College World Series will be starting shortly, so stay tuned for those results. Game broadcast will be on ESPNU.

Home Based Business: The Benefits of Starting A ... - Ill & Ancient

The U.S economy continues to grow and corporations are enjoying large profits, but the majority of Americans still struggle with finances. This is one of the main reasons many people are looking into the benefits that a home-based business can offer. There is no stressful morning commute, extremely low overhead, fewer restrictions, and few or no employees. Many laws don't apply to small businesses with no employees or only a small number of employees. It has been estimated that 95% of home based businesses are successful their first year with an average income of over $50,000. The general benefits of starting a home based business are many when you consider the tax advantages, money making potential, and savings on transportation and clothing.

Small businesses, including home-based businesses, receive numerous tax advantages. They can deduct their home, spouse and children (if you employ them), business vacations, cars, and business meals. You can even set up a pension plan while operating a home-based business. In addition, any losses you incur can be tax deductible and may even be refunded by the IRS, depending on your particular circumstances. To make your home-based business a success, you need to determine the factors that make one business succeed and another identical business to fail. Taking the incorrect actions can mean a failed home based business. Wanting the benefits of a home based business but taking no action at all surely means failure as well.

The fact is, most people who start a home business do so without the proper knowledge. The need for a continued cash flow forces them to quit before they can acquire that knowledge. The best way to succeed in your home-based business venture is to benefit from the experience of others. This is much easier than trying to learn the hard way and then giving up in frustration.

Starting a home-based business is an excellent financial opportunity. The tax benefits alone can make starting a business from your home the best financial move you'll ever make. The degree of success you have in your business is directly related to the amount of pleasure you get out of the business and the amount of work you put into it.

Choose a home-based business that you enjoy, that you can comfortably finance, and a business in which there is a large market in need of your service or product. Will your business require you to invite clients to your home? Do you need extra insurance coverage to operate a business from home? Will you need an extra office or workspace to conduct your business?

What about a second phone line, fax, or Internet connection? Some research and planning done ahead of time can save you time and money after your business is established. The benefits of starting a home based business are many, but be sure you have the time and energy to devote to your business so that you'll enjoy the financial and personal freedom you are searching for.

Keep in mind that you may have expenses for bookkeeping unless you plan to keep your books yourself. Keeping accurate, up-to-date records is critical in operating a successful business. With adequate research, common sense, and a passion for your job, you can enjoy the many benefits and potential profits owning a home-based business brings.
