  • Currently, doctors have no way to accurately measure damage to the body soon after a person is exposed to ionizing radiation.
  • It is therefore difficult to know whether a person is likely to suffer serious effects after an occupational or accidental exposure.
  • This animal study shows that radiation exposure alters the levels of certain small molecules in the blood, perhaps offering a reliable measure of damage to the body.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State University cancer researchers have identified molecules in the bloodstream that might accurately gauge the likelihood of radiation illness after exposure to ionizing radiation.

The animal study, led by researchers at The Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC James), shows that X-rays or gamma rays alter the levels of certain molecules called microRNA in the blood in a predictable way.

If verified in human subjects, the findings could lead to new methods for rapidly identifying people at risk for acute radiation syndrome after occupational exposures or accidents such as the recent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor incident. The microRNA markers might also help doctors plan radiation therapy for individual patients by taking into account how different people respond to radiation treatment, the researchers say.

The findings are reported in the journal PLOS ONE.

"Our paper reports the identification of a panel of microRNA markers in mice whose serum levels provide an estimate of radiation response and of the dose received after an exposure has occurred," says senior author Dr. Arab Chakravarti, chair and professor of Radiation Oncology, the Max Morehouse Chair in Cancer Research and co-director of the Brain Tumor Program.

"Accurate dose evaluation is critical for making medical decisions and for the timely administration of therapy to prevent or reduce acute and late effects."

The findings might also one day allow doctors to evaluate radiation toxicity during the course of therapy based on an individual's biology. "This would particularly benefit leukemia and lymphoma patients who receive total body irradiation in preparation for stem-cell transplantation," Chakravarti says.

First author Dr. Naduparambil Jacob, a research assistant professor in radiation oncology, noted that the study could be an important step in the development of biological dosimetry, or biodosimetry, a technology for identifying people at risk for acute radiation illnesses that develop within weeks of radiation exposure, and cancers and degenerative diseases that can occur months or years later.

"Biodosimetry is an emerging concept that could enable us to identify individuals who need immediate treatment after a radiation exposure and to better develop personalized radiation treatment plans for patients," Jacob says.

For this study, Chakravarti, Jacob and their colleagues evaluated dose-dependent changes in levels of 88 individual microRNAs in serum from mice after a single acute radiation exposure, and after fractionated doses of radiation that are typical of radiation treatment prior to stem-cell transplantation. Samples were collected from exposed and control animals 24 or 48 hours after exposure.

Key technical findings include:

  • After a one-time exposure, miRNA-150 showed a clear decrease over time with increasing radiation dose, with a drop of 30 percent after 24 hours and of 50 percent after 48 hours, even at the lowest exposure of one gray of radiation.
  • miRNA-200b and miRNA-762 showed increased levels after radiation exposure, with the changes more pronounced in animals receiving higher doses.
  • Animals receiving fractioned doses showed similar changes; e.g., miRNA-150 dropped about 50 percent after 24 hours in animals receiving 4 gray.

Oscars' strong showing boosts other ABC shows, too

NEW YORK (AP) ? The 40.4 million people who watched the Oscars this year boosted some other ABC shows, too.

Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars talk show got its biggest audience in the eight years he's been doing it, the Nielsen Co. said. About 5.8 million people tuned in for the show, which didn't begin until after midnight on the East Coast. Kimmel's earlier time slot on weeknights has also increased his visibility.

It was Kimmel's second-biggest audience ever, behind only a post-Super Bowl program in 2006.

Similarly, the Oscars-focused edition of "Good Morning America" on Monday reached 6.13 million viewers, above the show's season average of 5.27 million. NBC's "Today" show on Monday had 4.71 million viewers. ABC said it checked back to 2004 and couldn't find a larger margin of victory over "Today." Given the longtime dominance of "Today" up until last year, it's a good bet "Good Morning America" hasn't won by that much since the early 1990s.

NBC's most-watched show on Sunday night had less than a tenth of the "Oscars" audience, so it could be considered an achievement that "Today" got that close the next morning.

"Good Morning America" reached 6.12 million viewers last Wednesday, on co-host Robin Roberts' return to work after being out since last summer with a blood and bone marrow disease.

The Oscars had its biggest audience in three years.

When the month is over, CBS said it will have beaten all the other networks in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic that many advertisers seek for the first February since 1998. Among all viewers, CBS has had the top 31 most popular scripted programs in February.

On the other side, NBC's mid-winter slide continued. For the second time in six weeks, the network had a smaller prime-time viewership than the Spanish-language network Univision. Only one NBC show, "Chicago Fire," had a bigger audience than Univision's music awards show "Premio Lo Nuestro."

For the week in prime time, ABC averaged 11.3 million viewers (6.9 rating, 11 share). CBS was second with 9.6 million viewers (6.1, 10), Fox had 6.6 million (3.9, 6), NBC had 3.8 million (2.5, 4), the CW had 1.5 million (1.0, 2) and ION Television had 1.2 million (0.8, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision had a 4 million viewer average (2.1, 3), Telemundo had 1.3 million (0.7, 1), UniMas had 590,000 (0.3, 1), Estrella had 190,000 and Azteca 110,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.4 million viewers (6.3, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.4 million (5.6, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.4 million viewers (4.9, 9).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Feb. 18-24, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "The Oscars," ABC, 40.38 million; "Oscars Red Carpet Live" (Sunday, 8 p.m.), ABC, 25.53 million; "NCIS," CBS, 21.08 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 17.62 million; "Oscars Red Carpet Live" (Sunday, 7:30 p.m.), ABC, 16.5 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 16.27 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 14.37 million; "Person of Interest," CBS, 14.23 million; "American Idol" (Thursday), Fox, 13.66 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 13.41 million.

Small jet crash kills 5 in eastern Georgia

THOMSON, Ga. (AP) ? Authorities were investigating after a small jet crashed off the end of a runway after landing in eastern Georgia, killing five people and injuring two.

Thomson-McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall said the jet crashed after 8 p.m. Wednesday. He said the two survivors were taken to area hospitals but did not have information on their conditions. He said the identities of those killed were being withheld pending notification of family members.

The Hawker Beechcraft 390/Premier I departed from Nashville, Tenn., when it crashed just after landing at the Thomson-McDuffie County Airport, about 30 miles west of Augusta, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email.

Seven people were aboard, she told The Associated Press in the email. She told The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/WbvMGa) that the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate and determine the probable cause of the crash.

The Augusta Chronicle cited Assistant County Fire Chief Stephen Sewell as saying there were at least two survivors identified as a pilot and a passenger. But he provided no additional information about those aboard.

Bodies of the five people who died have been taken to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Decatur, where autopsies were planned, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said Thursday morning. The GBI worked with the sheriff's office to recover the bodies, as they sometimes do at accident scenes.

The newspaper also said a brush fire flared near the crash scene, quoting witnesses who reported power outages that prompted a utility to send workers to the site.

The plane was on a flight from John Tune Airport in Nashville, Tenn., to the Thomson-McDuffie airport, Bergen said in her email, adding the aircraft is registered to a company based in Wilmington, Del.

The Thomson McDuffie-Regional Airport is the largest general aviation facility in the Central Savannah River Area ? a 13 county region in east Georgia and western South Carolina, according to the airport's website. It serves Augusta, Thomson and the Reynolds Plantation/Lake Oconee Resort area.

BBB offers wedding planning tips

If you are planning to take the plunge, now is the time of year when many engaged couples are beginning to plan their wedding. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that as many contracts are signed and deposits are made, careful vetting of each vendor is crucial.

BBB received 88 wedding-related complaints in 2012. The typical complaints involved issues with wedding clothes, flowers, photography, reception halls, catering, music, transportation, and travel packages.

Since the average wedding costs more than $15,000 the Better Business Bureau advises engaged couples and their families to make wise consumer decisions when planning a wedding, as at other times. The following suggestions can prevent problems before, after, or during your wedding:

If you are attending a bridal show, don't get swept off your feet by a vendor.

? Before falling in love with a vendor and their services, ask if the company is available for your wedding date.

? Ask whether the special packages and pricing being offered at the bridal event are available after the show as well.

? Be careful of high-pressure sales tactics to make you commit to a product or service on the spot.

?

Vows work for marriage, but when hiring a vendor, get all sales promises in writing.

? Get all sales promises in writing, including specific dates, products, prices, name brands, etc. Make sure all oral agreements are included in the written contract. Cancellation policies should also be included.

? Research the vendor before signing a contract. Check out wedding vendors' reputations in the industry and can start by reading the vendor's BBB Business Review at www.mbc.bbb.org.

? Avoid paying in cash up-front for services. If you pay by credit cards you have protection in the event of a problem. Cheques and cash don't offer this protection.

? Confirm all services one or two weeks prior to the event and verify all of the details agreed upon. You don't want any unpleasant surprises on your wedding day.

? Beware of deeply discounted wedding gowns. There are several online companies that offer bridal gowns at extremely low prices but try to avoid offers that are too good to be true. You may likely end up with a dress that is of poor quality or fit, or the dress may get delivered late or never at all.

PSA: Sprint LTE is now live in San Francisco

PSA Sprint LTE is live in San Francisco

Imagine our surprise when, upon firing up Sprint's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 earlier today for some routine app updates, we saw the 4G logo light up (!) for the first time ever. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it appears that sometime in the past few days, Sprint's finally deigned to flick the LTE switch in a significant market -- namely beautiful San Francisco. We immediately grabbed our Optimus G and EVO 4G LTE review units and hopped in the car for some quick tests. The verdict? We found pockets of LTE in Potrero Hill and SoMa, and nothing but CDMA in the Mission District. Speeds reached peaks of 16.7Mbps down and 9.4Mbps up with full signal but performance varied wildly, even block to block. Sprint had already enabled LTE in parts of Silicon Valley and had marked the city by the bay as one of its upcoming rollouts. Do you use Sprint and live in SF? Hit the comments and let us know if you're enjoying the sweet nectar of LTE in your area.

LIve$##Watch Liverpool vs Swansea Live Streaming Online - Internet

The NFL is one of the most popular sports leagues on the planet. Millions of people tune in every week to see their favorite teams go head to head. I mean, even Jets fans still turn on their TV to watch their team play, even after this:

And as online video continues to become more and more popular the NFL has made sure to include streaming to help bolster their fan base even more. It used to be impossible to watch any major sporting event without a television and cable contract, but these last few years, the Super Bowl and even the Olympics have been available online.

According to the NFL communications page, "Last year?s live stream of the Super Bowl in the United States attracted 2.1 million users, making it the most-watched, single-game sports event ever online." And this year will be no different. Not only will the Super Bowl be live streamed, but so will the Wild Card games.

This season's Wild Card race is as tight as ever with so many teams still in the hunt. So the games are set to be pretty epic. The Wild Card Playoff Games will air in a double header on January 5th on NBC. First, it's the AFC with the Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. ET. Then you can watch NFC's Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers at 8 p.m. ET.

Both of these games will also be available for live streaming online and on your Verizon smartphone.
