St. John?s coach Steve Lavin will miss his second consecutive game, Thursday night?s Big East game at No. 12 Louisville, as he continues to mourn the passing of his father.
Lavin?s father, Cap, died last weekend in Northern California. Steve Lavin also missed Sunday?s loss to Syracuse.
?We are grateful for the heartfelt encouragement, prayers and support received since our father?s passing,? Lavin said in a statement. ?The thoughtful sentiments and caring messages we received via text, Twitter, e-mail and voicemail from friends, current players, former players, colleagues and college basketball fans have helped to give our family an emotional lift during a challenging time in our lives.?
Assistant coach Rico Hines, just as he did in the Syracuse game, will coach St. John?s against Louisville. The Red Storm, after winning five straight, have lost two of three games and stand at 15-9, 7-5 in Big East play.
?What I always tell them is to lose yourself to the game we love so much, lose yourself to basketball,?? Hines told the New York Post. ?Do the things they?ve been doing since they were little guys. During those two hours nothing else in life matters than being with your teammates, being with your brothers and competing.
?No question they hurt and they feel for Coach, but at the same time we have a job we have to go out and do, which is we?ve got to beat Louisville.?
Lavin is expected to return to campus soon. The Red Storm, after Thursday?s game, are off until playing host to South Florida on Wednesday.
